They do better than kids who attend regular public schools. &#8220;teach to the test&#8221; \u2014 as if that&#8217;s somehow a <em>Bad <\/em>thing.<\/p>\n<p>Tests are used to measure what students should be able to do. Schools that <em>don&#8217;t <\/em>&#8220;teach to the test&#8221; Teaching effectively is not possible. <em>All<\/em>. The critics ignore the fact that charter schools are public. <em>Work<\/em> \u2014 and, most embarrassing to the vested interests that depend on the regular system, work <em>Better <\/em>For children from lower-income minorities <\/p>\n<p>As ex-Gov. David Paterson is a Democrat who fought for more charters in 2010 and was elected as the ex-Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/02\/22\/former-ny-govs-david-paterson-george-pataki-demand-more-charters-to-help-minorities\/\">The Post<\/a>: &#8220;The charter schools took the kids that people said couldn&#8217;t learn. These kids are getting scholarships and going to college.&#8221; <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><a Claremont charter school.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Stephen Yang<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Our reporting has shown that students of color in cities have a better chance of success if they go to charter schools, which offer higher proficiency in math and English.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>This is despite the fact that about 80% charter students are considered economically disadvantaged. Additionally, roughly 15% of charter students have Individual Education Plans (usually associated to being in special education). <a href=\"https:\/\/nyccharterschools.org\/policy-research\/fact-sheets\/charter-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NYC Charter School Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, total city charter enrollment is about 41% black and 49% Hispanic \u2014 proof positive that charters are increasing opportunity, not &#8220;skimming the best students,&#8221; As critics also pretend.<\/p>\n<p>Bottom line: Gov. Kathy Hochul&#8217;s push in favor of more charters opening in the city has been the most significant. <em>Genuine<\/em> A progressive idea for education policy. It is also opposed by state legislators. <em>Opposition<\/em> True &#8220;social justice&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/02\/18\/the-ufts-racist-effort-to-crush-charter-schools\/\">At the direction of the majority-white United Federation of Teachers<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Despite the UFT&#8217;s best efforts these last two decades, charters now enroll more than 142,000 New York City students \u2014 about 15% of public-school-age kids. Hochul&#8217;s success will see these numbers rise and more children will be able to pass their exams.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>&#8220;It is outrageous that the Legislature would prevent mostly minority parents the opportunity to improve their children&#8217;s education,&#8221; thunders ex\u2013Gov. George Pataki was the Republican who passed the charter law&#8217;s original version in 1998. &#8220;It&#8217;s simply discrimination and unfair . . . and there&#8217;s no excuse.
