Meanwhile, looting and riots caused billions of dollars of damage in city centers across the U.S. and Seattle is considered the best-managed locality.<\/p>\n<p>The city is alive and well today. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/seattle-news\/law-justice\/seattle-settles-chop-lawsuit-after-judge-levied-sanctions-over-deleted-texts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Settlement reached in a federal district court lawsuit<\/a> The city was accused of violating the civil rights of many business owners when it ordered police to leave one section of Capitol Hill and allowed protesters to set up their own lawless. &#8220;autonomous zone.&#8221; This area was referred to as the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone, (CHAZ), or Capitol Hill Occupied Occupied Protest. This left business owners in the areas completely abandoned as law and order broke down \u2014 without a police presence, there was rampant violence, drug markets, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jackkelly\/2020\/06\/14\/meet-raz-simone-the-alleged-warlord-of-the-capitol-hill-autonomous-zone\/\">Literal armed warlords<\/a> Patrolling the streets<\/p>\n<p>This settlement was reached after a federal judge placed severe sanctions on the city. The city had allegedly deleted thousands of text messages, including those involving the former mayor and chief of police in connection to their handling of the autonomous area. This notion that city officials had anything to hide is in direct contradiction with the rhetoric used by the city during the month when it abandoned the CHAZ business owners.<\/p>\n<p>Jenny Durkan, the former mayor of Calgary, went on CNN to discuss what was going on in the CHAZ. &#8220;a block party atmosphere.&#8221; &#8220;We could have the summer of love,&#8221; She said. Trump criticized the city for abandoning law enforcement and order. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/11\/us\/seattle-autonomous-zone.html\">Durkan and the former President have a Twitter dispute<\/a>, and Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/live-updates-protests-for-racial-justice\/2020\/06\/11\/874690470\/go-back-to-your-bunker-seattle-mayor-tells-trump-in-spat-over-protests\">Jay Inslee spoke to Trump<\/a> To &#8220;stay out of Washington state&#8217;s business.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There was never any doubt. But, now that Seattle has settled this lawsuit, it&#8217;s impossible to argue that Seattle officials didn&#8217;t encourage violence or that they reneged on their basic responsibility to ensure citizens&#8217; safety. Is it? Here&#8217;s a hint: If you are wondering who would be so determined to hold on to a political narrative that anarchists taking control of your city was okay, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/seattle-news\/law-justice\/seattle-settles-chop-lawsuit-after-judge-levied-sanctions-over-deleted-texts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Today&#8217;s Seattle Times write up<\/a> The epic &#8220;challenge accepted&#8221; moment:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>While CHOP was generally peaceful, there were some vandalism and occasional outbreaks of violence. This included fights and an attempt at torching the abandoned police precinct. At least four shootings claimed the lives of two teenagers. One of these teens was a 16-year old boy who died during the demonstration.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This is right. Other than the fightings, shootings, multiple murders, and an attempt at burning down a police station to its ground, it was &#8220;mostly peaceful,&#8221; According to the local newspaper. It is hard to believe that anyone would mistake this for a local newspaper. &#8220;summer of love&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p>Media&#8217;s suspicious convergence around the phrase &#8220;mostly peaceful&#8221; The Floyd protests of the summer 2020 were transparently dishonest. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/cnn-panned-for-on-air-graphic-reading-fiery-but-mostly-peaceful-protest-in-front-of-kenosha-fire\">CNN chyron reports on the protests at Kenosha &#8220;mostly peaceful&#8221;<\/a> The background of the fire is now iconic,<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s amazing that two decades later, a major newspaper continues to use this phrase as a magic talisman, hoping it will prevent them from holding their local leaders for, among other, crimes, the facilitation and death of two young black men. \u00a0<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<div class=\"article-author-description fst-italic\">\n Mark Hemingway, the Book Editor of The Federalist, was previously a senior writer at The Weekly Standard.
