One aspect of this critical debate is often overlooked.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s past time that college students can carry guns like other young Americans.<\/p>\n<p>Michigan State&#8217;s campus is meant to be an example of a university campus. &#8220;gun-free zone,&#8221; Both students and staff are included <u><br \/>\n<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/trustees.msu.edu\/bylaws-ordinances-policies\/ordinances\/ordinance-18.00.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Interdiction<\/a><br \/>\n<\/u> It is illegal to legally carry firearms. Although this is intended to keep the community safe it can make its members vulnerable if someone does harm. Unfortunately, this MSU is not the only one. Many states ban college students from exercising the Second Amendment right of bear arms.<\/p>\n<p>According to the activist group, <u><br \/>\n<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/concealedcampus.org\/2020\/07\/how-many-states-allow-campus-carry\/#:~:text=Short%20Answer%3A%20Approximately%20eleven%20states,Ohio%20voluntarily%20allow%20concealed%20carry.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Students for concealed carry<\/a><br \/>\n<\/u>Only 11 states allow affirmatively &#8220;campus carry,&#8221; As it is known. It is currently prohibited in 16 states, while 23 states allow colleges the freedom to set their own rules. This usually leads to campuses banning firearms.<\/p>\n<p>The law has a clear inconsistency. Young adults can obtain a permit to conceal carry in any state, even those that ban college students from carrying firearms. A Massachusetts 21-year old can apply for a permit and conceal carry elsewhere in the state. <u><br \/>\n<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/info-details\/gun-ownership-in-massachusetts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">permit<\/a><br \/>\n<\/u> It is illegal to openly carry a firearm in public. But if that same 21-year-old is a college student at one of Massachusetts&#8217;s many public universities \u2014 which are <i>It is supposed<\/i> to be bound by the Constitution and forced to respect our rights \u2014 he cannot conceal carry on campus.<\/p>\n<p>Is that possible?<\/p>\n<p>It is hard to think of a more fundamental right than the basic right for you to protect your life. Our Constitution guarantees that every person has the right to bear and keep arms in self defense. This is a fact confirmed by the Supreme Court. It is unconscionable to arbitrarily deprive entire segments of adult society of this right just because they have chosen higher education.<\/p>\n<p>The warnings of the anti-gun crowd about the dangers that college students will face if they exercise their rights are clear. According to the anti-gun crowd, campus carry will transform college campuses into bloody war zones that can spark gun battles and enrage students over debates in class. This is scary stuff.<\/p>\n<p>It is fiction, however.<\/p>\n<p>As we know, campus carry has been seen in more than a dozen US states. These include both red states like Texas or Utah, as well as blue states like Oregon or Colorado. <i>None<\/i> These states have witnessed the dystopian outcomes that opponents predicted. Even liberal-leaning media outlets were able to survive the Texas campus carry law&#8217;s effects in the two years that followed. <u><br \/>\n<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/in-depth\/2018\/09\/27\/305798\/two-years-after-campus-carry-took-effect-has-anything-changed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">admitted<\/a><br \/>\n<\/u> It is not possible to predict an increase in gun crime.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, self-defense saves lives. Self-defense uses firearms <u><br \/>\n<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/nap.nationalacademies.org\/read\/18319\/chapter\/3#15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">About<\/a><br \/>\n<\/u> According to the Institute of Medicine, this number can rise to 500,000 to 3,000,000 per year in America. Although we don&#8217;t have the ability to know for certain if campus carrying would prevent any campus shootings or attacks, It&#8217;s possible, but it&#8217;s not impossible. We have seen too many cases to count the instances in which shooters were involved.<br \/>\n<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/washington-secrets\/fbi-undercounts-armed-citizens-stopping-attacks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stopping them in their tracks<\/a><br \/>\n Armed citizens and there are other reasons to believe that murderers are involved <u><br \/>\n<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/crimeresearch.org\/2018\/06\/more-misleading-information-from-bloombergs-everytown-for-gun-safety-on-guns-analysis-of-recent-mass-shootings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">More likely to target<\/a><br \/>\n<\/u> There are places where ordinary people cannot carry guns.<\/p>\n<p>We have nothing to lose. The status quo is unacceptable. It is not just bad policy to deny college students their right to self-defense when they are being brutally murdered.
