He had his chance at revolution and blew it. Today\u2019s socialist is all about race, gender and transgender rights.&nbsp; Class is an afterthought.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cTo understand this is to understand the Left\u2019s takeover of the college campus and all the ills that takeover has spawned: from MeToo to Black Lives Matter to girls competing against biological boys,\u201d D\u2019Souza continues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe all live on campus now,\u201d says D\u2019Souza, quoting liberal writer <a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2018\/02\/we-all-live-on-campus-now.html\">Andrew Sullivan<\/a>. \u201c<\/span><span>Campus culture has now metastasized into the culture of the whole society,\u201d he states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Identity socialism is \u201cfirst and foremost about division,\u201d dividing along more than just class, such as along racial, gender, and gender identity lines,\u201d says D\u2019Souza. \u201c<\/span><span>Blacks and Latinos are in, whites are out. Women are in, men are out. Gays, bisexuals, transsexuals, transgenders are in; heterosexuals are out. Illegals are in, native-born citizens are out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>So where did identity socialism come from?<\/span> <span>\u201cMeet Herbert Marcuse,\u201d D\u2019Souza states.&nbsp;<\/span><span>\u201cBorn in Berlin in 1898, Marcuse fled Germany at the dawn of the Nazi era. After stints at Columbia, Harvard and Brandeis, Marcuse moved to California, where he joined the University of California at San Diego in 1965.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Rather than the \u201cparadise\u201d of Southern California softening Marcuse\u2019s disdain for capitalism, D\u2019Souza explains that \u201cthe more Marcuse prospered, the more he wanted to bring the system down.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cHe had a problem, however,\u201d D\u2019Souza continues. \u201cA big one. Socialism didn\u2019t work in America. Life was too good. The working class in the US didn\u2019t aspire to overturn the existing order, they aspired to own a home. How could you foment revolution without revolutionaries? Classic Marxism had no answer for this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, Marcuse had the answer, almost a hundred years after Marx: <a href=\"https:\/\/plato.stanford.edu\/entries\/marcuse\/#SpeLibGreRefNewSen\">college students<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/span><span>\u201c<\/span><span>They<\/span> <span>would be the recruits for what he termed the Great Refusal \u2014 the repudiation and overthrow of free market capitalism.\u201d D\u2019Souza says, adding that the \u201cconditions were perfect.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><span>After all, the college students at the time \u201cwere already living in what was in-effect a socialist commune,\u201d who found themselves \u201crestless and bored,\u201d rather than grateful for the opportunity to study and learn. They were also searching for \u201cmeaning.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cOf course, as with all successful social movements, timing was critical,\u201d D\u2019Souza explains. \u201cHere Marcuse was very fortunate.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><span>D\u2019Souza reminds viewers that \u201cthe 60s was the decade of the Vietnam War,\u201d and that \u201cstudents faced the prospect of being drafted,\u201d inspiring \u201cselfish reasons to oppose the conflict.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"What Is Identity Socialism? | 5 Minute Video\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TAPOQFWSUkE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cMarcuse and his acolytes turned this selfishness into righteousness by teaching the students that they weren\u2019t draft-dodgers; they were noble resisters who were part of a global struggle for social justice,\u201d says D\u2019Souza.&nbsp;<\/span><span>\u201cMarcuse portrayed Ho Chi Minh and the Vietcong as a kind of Third World proletariat, fighting to free themselves from American Imperialism. This represented a transposition of Marxist categories. The new working class were the Vietnamese \u2018freedom fighters.\u2019 The evil capitalists were American soldiers serving on behalf of the American government.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In addition to the students, Marcuse also found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/United-States-Socialism-Behind-Evil\/dp\/1250163781\">other groups to target<\/a>. \u201cThe first was the Black Power movement, which was a militant adjunct to the civil rights movement,\u201d D\u2019Souza states. \u201cThe beauty of this group, from Marcuse\u2019s point of view, was that, unlike white students, its members wouldn\u2019t have to be instructed in the art of grievance; blacks had grievances that dated back centuries.\u201d Race replaced class, with \u201cblacks\u201d becoming the working class and \u201cwhites\u201d the capitalist class.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAnother emerging source of disgruntlement was the feminists,\u201d D\u2019Souza continues. \u201cMarcuse recognized they too could be taught to see themselves as an oppressed class. This of course would require a further Marxist transposition: \u2018women\u2019 would now be viewed as the working class and \u201cmen\u201d the capitalist class; the class category would now be shifted to gender.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Knowing that this would take time, Marcuse trusted that \u201csoon enough, the radical students would be the radical professors teaching identity socialism to a fresh crop of impressionable recruits.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cOver time, Marcuse believed, the university could produce a new type of culture, and that culture would then spill into the larger society to infect primary education, the news media and entertainment. Even big business, the hated capitalist class, itself, would succumb,\u201d D\u2019Souza concludes.&nbsp;<\/span><span>\u201cHe was right.
