The committee presented its findings in a 63-page\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brightspotcdn.byu.edu\/12\/58\/d61b3164487da5946d13471e7567\/byu-race-equity-belonging-report-feb21.pdf\"><span>report<\/span><\/a> <span>to the university\u2019s president.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The report listed 26 \u201ckey findings\u201d on how to create a more \u201cequitable world\u201d for students. The findings were focused on expanding the oversight and power of college administrators, creating a new curriculum to fit a \u201crace-conscious\u201d narrative, and recruiting students based on race.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The first recommendation was that the school create a central \u201cOffice of Diversity and Belonging\u201d alongside a new Vice President of Diversity position. This office would be in addition to the three inclusion centers that already exist on BYU\u2019s campus: The Multicultural Student Services office, the International Student and Scholar Services office, and the Office of Student Success and Inclusion. All three offices would be forced to report to the new diversity office.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to the report, the newfound Office of Diversity and Belonging would be tasked with developing \u201cdiversity and inclusion training programs and resources\u201d for the university.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The report also calls for the university to establish a separate committee \u201cdedicated to advancing racial understanding, enhancing equity, and promoting belonging for [Black, Indigenous, and Person of Color or BIPOC] communities.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Other positions that the report calls for include a Vice President or Associate Vice President of Enrollment Management who would focus on the \u201cacademic success of BIPOC students.\u201d The report calls for a subsequent committee to assist the new Vice President of Enrollment Management. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Another expansion of university oversight includes creating a system that allows students to report instances of racial discrimination on campus. These systems are commonly referred to as \u201cbias response teams,\u201d and have been known to have a chilling effect on student speech. Critics argue that students are often scared to speak unpopular opinions for fear that a peer will report them to the \u201cbias response team\u201d and they will face punishment for legally permissible speech.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The task force also recommended that the school \u201ccommit to curricular changes\u201d to religious studies classes to educate students on \u201crace, unity, and diversity.\u201d The school was told to consider adding statements from \u201cprophets and apostles\u201d that demonstrate \u201ccivility, racial and ethnic harmony, and mutual respect.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The report also asks that the BYU Honor Code and the BYU Dress and Grooming Standards are applied with \u201ccultural competence and sensitivity.\u201d Separate departments were also tasked with adopting statements on \u201crace, equity, and belonging.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>One of the findings insinuated that the school should establish a racially segregated center for minority students. The report calls for the school to \u201cestablish a dedicated, visible space on campus for underrepresented students and those who serve this population.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Among its \u201crace-conscious\u201d policy suggestions was one that calls for the school to \u201cdesign and implement a race-conscious recruitment strategy\u201d to attract more minority applicants. Another called for an investigation into whether the school\u2019s admissions policies have a \u201cdisparate impact\u201d on minority applicants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The report specifically calls for the university\u2019s Office of the General Counsel to evaluate the legal parameters of a newfound \u201crace-conscious admissions model.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Elite universities have faced pushback for creating \u201crace-conscious\u201d recruitment practices. The Trump administration\u2019s Justice Department filed a lawsuit against Yale University for allegedly violating civil rights laws. The lawsuit alleged that the school made race the \u201cdeterminative factor\u201d in its admissions decisions. The investigation was<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/justice-department-drops-yale-lawsuit-9587f156426b3cd905be373e41bb12d7\"><span>dropped<\/span><\/a> <span>by the Biden administration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The BYU report also suggests that the school create a plan to support existing \u201cBIPOC\u201d faculty and create a plan to \u201calleviate the \u2018cultural taxation\u2019 burdens carried by BIPOC faculty.\u201d BIPOC faculty will also be provided with increased opportunities to serve in senior leadership positions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Final suggestions include creating more scholarship opportunities and designating scholarships based on a student\u2019s \u201csocioeconomic profile\u201d and \u201cadverse life circumstances.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Brigham Young University did not respond to requests for comment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
