He could not provide further details.<\/p>\n<p>According to law enforcement sources, O&#8217;Connell was shot once and found dead in his bed by his family on Saturday. Others said there were no signs of forced entry to his home, and the crime is not thought to have been random.<\/p>\n<p>The Los Angeles County Sheriff&#8217;s Department stated that the shooting took place just before 1 p.m. on Saturday. A man was found with a gunshot wound in his chest by deputies. Soon after, the victim was declared dead.<\/p>\n<p>Archbishop of Los Angeles Jos\u00e9 H. Gomez said in a statement Saturday &#8220;I am very sad this afternoon to report that our beloved Auxiliary Bishop David O&#8217;Connell has passed away unexpectedly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is a shock and I have no words to express my sadness,&#8221; Gomez said. &#8220;As a priest and later a bishop here in Los Angeles for forty-five years, Bishop Dave was a man of deep prayer who had a great love for Our Blessed Mother.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He was a peacemaker with a heart for the poor and the immigrant, and he had a passion for building a community where the sanctity and dignity of every human life was honored and protected,&#8221; He added.<\/p>\n<p>Archbishop Gomez stated in a separate declaration that O&#8217;Connell&#8217;s murder was a homicide after he learned from the Los Angeles County Sheriff&#8217;s office on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are deeply disturbed and saddened by this news,&#8221; Gomez said. &#8220;Let us continue to pray for Bishop Dave and his family.
