He was 78.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m\">\nBelzer passed away early Sunday morning at his Bozouls, southwest France home, according to Bill Scheft, a writer and long-time friend of Belzer. <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>. &#8220;He had lots of health issues, and his last words were, \u2018Fuck you, motherfucker,'&#8221; Scheft.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m\">\nBelzer made his film debut with the hilarious <em>Groove Tube<\/em>\u00a0(1974), warmed up the audience in the early days\u00a0<em>Saturday Night Live<\/em> Hulk Hogan put her to sleep, and she is now a legend.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"injected-related-story \/\/ u-margin-tb-250 u-margin-t-4@desktop-xl u-margin-b-3@desktop-xl\">\n<h3 id=\"title-of-a-story\" class=\"c-title  a-font-primary-xs lrv-u-margin-b-075\">\n<p>Similar Stories\t\t<\/p>\n<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m\">\nMunch first appeared in 1993, on the first episode.\u00a0<em>Homicide<\/em>\u00a0And his last in 2016,\u00a0<em>Law &#038; order: SVU.\u00a0<\/em>There are two NBC dramas in between.<em>,\u00a0<\/em>Belzer also played the role of detective on eight other series. His grip on the character lasted much longer than James Arness\u2019.\u00a0<em>Gunsmoke<\/em>\u00a0Kelsey Grammer&#8217;s on\u00a0<em>Cheers\u00a0<\/em>And\u00a0<em>Frasier<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m\">\nIt is undoubtedly one of the most popular. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/richard-belzer-dead-hollywood-tributes-1235329963\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Television history&#8217;s most memorable cops<\/a>, Munch \u2014 based on a real-life Baltimore detective \u2014 was a highly intelligent, doggedly diligent investigator who believed in conspiracy theories, distrusted the system and pursued justice through a jaded eye. To prove his point, he would often resort to dry, acerbic wisdomcracks. &#8220;I&#8217;m a homicide detective. The only time I wonder why is when they tell me the truth,&#8221; A typical Munch retort followed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m\">\n\tIn a 2016 interview for the website\u00a0The Interviews: An Oral History of Television,\u00a0<em>Homicide<\/em>\u00a0Barry Levinson, executive producer <a href=\"http:\/\/interviews.televisionacademy.com\/interviews\/barry-levinson?clip=92975#about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Recalled<\/a> Listen to Belzer on\u00a0<em>Howard Stern Show<\/em>\u00a0Munch, and how much you like him. &#8220;We were looking at some other actors, and when I heard him, I said, \u2018Why don&#8217;t we find out about Richard Belzer?&#8221; Levinson spoke. &#8220;I like the rhythm of the way he talks. And that&#8217;s how that happened.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m\">\nIn all seven seasons, the pencil-thin Belzer played Munch. The actor was not ready to let go of the role when it ended in 1999. He was Munch, a character he had played on NBC&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Law &#038; Order\u00a0<\/em>Three times, 1996-1999. He thought he might make a great fit for the show.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m\">\n\t&#8220;When\u00a0<em>Homicide<\/em>\u00a0was canceled, I was in France with my wife and she said, \u2018Let&#8217;s open a bottle of champagne and toast: You did this character for seven years,'&#8221; In 2009, Belzer was retold in the book\u00a0<em>Law &#038; Order: Special Victims Unit Unofficial Companion<\/em>. &#8220;And then I remembered that Benjamin Bratt was leaving\u00a0<em>L&#038;O<\/em>, and so I called my manager and said, \u2018Call <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/dick-wolf\/\" id=\"auto-tag_dick-wolf\" data-tag=\"dick-wolf\">Dick Wolf<\/a> \u2014 maybe Munch can become [Det. Lennie] Briscoe&#8217;s partner&#8217; \u2014- because we had teamed for the crossover. So he called and Dick said, \u2018What a great idea, but I&#8217;ve already cast Jesse Martin to be the new guy [opposite Jerry Orbach].'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m\">\nWolf, however was still in the process for developing a\u00a0<em>Law &#038; Order<\/em>\u00a0Spinoff will focus on the NYPD\u2019s Special Victims Unit, which investigates sexually-motivated crimes. Munch was his choice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m\">\nWhen\u00a0<em>Law &#038; Order: The SVU<\/em>\u00a0Munch, who debuted in September 1999 had moved from Baltimore to New York to team up with Det. Olivia Benson (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/mariska-hargitay\/\" id=\"auto-tag_mariska-hargitay\" data-tag=\"mariska-hargitay\">Mariska Hargitay<\/a>(det. Elliot Stabler<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/christopher-meloni-0\/\" id=\"auto-tag_christopher-meloni-0\" data-tag=\"christopher-meloni-0\">Christopher Meloni<\/a>). Capt. Capt.\u00a0<em>Law &#038; Order<\/em>\u00a0To lead the squad.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m\">\nBelzer stayed for 14 seasons because Munch&#8217;s sardonic demeanor was perfect for the series&#8217; grim tone. In 2014, the character announced his resignation from the NYPD. However, Munch returned to the series a few years later in the 17th-season episode. &#8220;Fashionable Crimes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m\">\nBelzer and Munch appeared in an episode of 1997&#8217;s\u00a0<em>The X-Files<\/em>\u00a0that appropriately dealt with the origins of the show&#8217;s resident conspiracists \u2014 the Lone Gunmen. He also appeared on\u00a0<em>The Beat<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Law &#038; Order: A Trial by Jury<\/em>\u00a0And\u00a0<em>The Wire<\/em>\u00a0He was a cop for laughs\u00a0<em>Arrested Development<\/em>,\u00a0<em>30 Rock\u00a0<\/em>And\u00a0<em>Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt<\/em>. Even a puppet that looked like Munch showed up!\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5121VjLwqZM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><em>Sesame Street<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m\">\n\t&#8220;I never asked anyone to be on their show. So it&#8217;s doubly flattering to me to see me depicted in a script and that I&#8217;m so recognizable and lovable as the sarcastic detective and smart-ass,&#8221; Belzer <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/thecomicscomic.com\/2008\/10\/28\/interview-richa\/\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a> Interview from 2008. &#8220;Much to my delight, because he is a great character for me to play, it&#8217;s fun for me. So I&#8217;m not upset about being typecast at all.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m\">\nRichard Jay Belzer was conceived in Bridgeport, Connecticut on August 4, 1944. His talent for comedy was born out of an abusive childhood, and a mother who beat him as well as his older brother Len.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m\">\n\t&#8220;She always had some rationale for hitting us,&#8221; He <a href=\"http:\/\/people.com\/archive\/richard-belzer-vol-39-no-12\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Telled<\/a>\u00a0<em>People<\/em>\u00a0magazine in 1993. &#8220;My kitchen was the toughest room I ever worked. I had to make my mom laugh or I&#8217;d get my ass kicked.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m\">\n\tBelzer&#8217;s self-described &#8220;uncontrollable wit&#8221;\u00a0He was often in trouble in the classroom and his time at Massachusetts&#8217; Dean Junior College was cut short when he was kicked out for organizing campus protests. He was then offered a variety of odd jobs, such as a census taker, dock worker, and jewelry salesman. For a time he worked as a journalist. <em>The Bridgeport Post<\/em>\u00a0newspaper.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m\">\nBelzer was forced to reconsider his priorities following a tragic event. Charles, a businessman and distraught over the death of his wife, Frances, tried suicide in 1967, three years after Frances&#8217;s mother died from breast cancer. Belzer saved his father&#8217;s life and found him, but his father died a year later. (Belzer&#8217;s brother, who produced the radio\u00a0program <em>The Comedy Hour<\/em>After his wife&#8217;s death, he would also commit suicide by jumping from the roof his Upper West Side apartment building. <em>Sesame Street<\/em> director Emily Squires, had died.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m\">\nBelzer said that his father&#8217;s passing had been a hard blow and that he felt it was time for him to try comedy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m\">\nBelzer responded to an ad in a lark.\u00a0<em>The Village Voice<\/em>\u00a0To audition for Channel One East Village Comedy Troupe, directed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/ken-shapiro-dead-groove-tube-writer-director-star-was-76-1061812\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ken Shapiro<\/a> Lane Sarasohn. He performed the bits he had honed growing up \u2014 including imitations of Marlon Brando, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/jerry-lewis\/\" id=\"auto-tag_jerry-lewis\" data-tag=\"jerry-lewis\">Jerry Lewis<\/a> and, at his bar mitzvah, Bob Dylan \u2014 and got the gig in 1971.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m\">\nIts show must be called\u00a0<em>Groove Tube<\/em>Channel One was a channel that specialized in comedy skits about TV conventions, such as anchormen and clowns on children&#8217;s shows. &#8220;Go and see\u00a0<em>Groove Tube<\/em>,&#8221; Clive Barnes had published in 1969. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lanesarasohn.com\/nytimes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Review<\/a> For\u00a0<em>The New York Times<\/em>. &#8220;It is a whole lot better than staying home and watching television.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m\">\nChannel One raised the level of its mock television by simultaneously broadcasting the skits from three TV monitors within the theater. Sarasohn and Shapiro also recorded the performances and put them together into a program that could be played at local colleges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m\">\nThe response was so strong, that they made a film deal. It became the R-rated, sketch-filled movie.\u00a0<em>Groove Tube<\/em>. Belzer played a low-life drug dealer in a parody on police dramas. An American president chided a foreign dignitary while a drag queen and blackface prostitute was also in the scene. The movie was also the first Chevy Chase film.).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m\">\n\t&#8220;We were very high \u2014 when we wrote it, when we shot it, when we premiered it and when we realized we&#8217;d made a movie,&#8221; Belzer <a href=\"http:\/\/tv.avclub.com\/richard-belzer-1798222737\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><\/a> In a 2010 interview with The A.V. Club. &#8220;It was truly underground in the sense that before it was a movie, we had a little theater and we showed\u00a0<em>Groove Tube<\/em>\u00a0on three monitors in a 90-seat theater. So for people to pay to see television, before cable, it was pretty innovative.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m\">\nBelzer&#8217;s success on Channel One led him to stand-up gigs at clubs such as Catch a Rising Star and the Improv in New York. He appeared on the\u00a0<em>National Lampoon Radio Hour<\/em>\u00a0Alongside Chase, John Belushi and Gilda Radner, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, and Bill Murray. And when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/lorne-michaels\/\" id=\"auto-tag_lorne-michaels\" data-tag=\"lorne-michaels\">Lorne Michaels<\/a> launched\u00a0<em>Saturday Night Live<\/em>\u00a0He selected Belzer to warm up for the audience in 1975. (Belzer)\u00a0<em>Groove Tube<\/em>\u00a0Michael was Michael&#8217;s inspiration\u00a0<em>SNL<\/em>.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m\">\n\t&#8220;It was thrilling in those days to be a part of that because \u2014 regardless of what anyone said \u2014 a lot of people didn&#8217;t know how that was going to be accepted,&#8221; He <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=127019083\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Telled<\/a> NPR 1989. &#8220;This was like giving the kids the key to the store \u2014 to have all of these \u2018anti-establishment&#8217; people have a TV show on a network. So they asked me to do some sketches and do the warm-ups. I just kind of did what I did in nightclubs. I talked to the audience. I did some of my material, but I tried to improvise and ad-lib as much as I could. And it was fascinating doing that in a television studio and not in a nightclub.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m\">\nBelzer hosted the Lifetime talk show, which was short-lived.\u00a0<em>Hot Properties<\/em>, where his guests\u00a0in March 1985\u00a0included Hogan and Mr. T, on hand to promote the\u00a0inaugural WrestleMania. The 6-foot-8, 300-pound Hogan placed the 6-foot-1 and 150-pound Belzer in front chinlock. He knocked him unconscious, then released him to the floor where the limp comedian banged on his head, drawing blood.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m\">\n\t&#8220;He came very close to killing me,&#8221; Belzer <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7ICoZV4ZEjg\" target=\"_blank\">Telled<\/a> Roy Firestone in 1990. &#8220;I was told by a sports medicine expert that if I had fallen a few inches either way I could have been crippled for life, I could have been dead.&#8221; He sued Hogan, Mr. T. Vince McMahon, and the World Wrestling Federation, for $5 million. He also received $400,0000 in a 1990 settlement which he claimed he used to pay down his house in France.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m\">\nBelzer&#8217;s frustration grew as he saw his contemporaries Chase and Robin Williams become wealthy making movies. He admitted during his\u00a0<em>People<\/em>\u00a0Interview he agreed to appear in\u00a0<em>Everything works<\/em>A salacious cable game show that only exists to pay for a Hawaiian family vacation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m\">\n\t&#8220;Three contestants come out, and the celebrity panel takes a good look at them,&#8221; Belzer described the format. &#8220;Then female contestants had to stick their naked breasts through a cutout or men their bare buttocks, and the panel guessed which person it was. At the end, during the credits, the camera zooms in on me, and I mouth the words, \u2018I did it for the money.&#8217; It&#8217;s the only time I sold out in my life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m\">\nThen John Munch made everything possible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m\">\n\tBelzer also played an MC \u2014 basically himself \u2014 in\u00a0<em>Fame<\/em> (1980)\u00a0<em>Scarface<\/em> (1983) and included bits.\u00a0<em>Author!
