Apple settled the claims last year.\u00a0Court documents state that a lawsuit was filed alleging that MacBook laptops made between 2015 and 2019 contained defective keyboards.<\/p>\n<p>The deadline to submit a claim for the settlement for the butterfly keyboard is 11:59 p.m. PST on March 6, or less than three weeks from now according to aa href=&#8221;https:\/\/secure.keyboardsettlement.com\/&#8221;>settlement-related Website<\/a>. If you wish to object to this settlement, the deadline has expired, as it was February 10.<\/p>\n<p>Online claims can be submitted via the settlement website. You can also mail a completed form to\u00a0MacBook Keyboard Litigation Settlement c\/o JND Legal Administration PO Box 91341 Seattle, WA 98111. For more information, you can also call 1-855-579-1311 the claims administrator.<\/p>\n<p>For claim approval, proof of purchase and the serial number of the laptop will be required. Customers will also have to\u00a0support &#8220;[their] claim with reasonable documentation and information that you received a Topcase Replacement or a Keycap replacement&#8221;  &#8220;may also download and submit a Paper Claim Form or request from the Claims Administrator,&#8221; The website has the following information.<\/p>\n<p>After the March 6 deadline, you can apply for a &#8220;Final Approval Hearing&#8221; According to the website a conference is set for March 16th and any payments will likely follow that. &#8220;If the Settlement is approved, there may be appeals,&#8221; It adds. &#8220;The appeal process can take time. If there is no appeal, your settlement benefit will be processed promptly. Please be patient.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Eligible customers may claim up to $395. The settlement website however notes that this will depend on how many repairs were made to the impacted MacBook.\u00a0Consumers who need to replace several keyboards in a short period of time can receive an estimated payment between $300 and $395. This amount is available until Nov. 24, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>If a customer replaced an impacted MacBook keyboard just once, they are eligible for up to\u00a0$125, it notes.\u00a0Customers who have replaced key caps on keyboards may be eligible for up to $50<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you appear in Apple&#8217;s records as having received multiple Topcase Replacements, you will receive a summary notice via email or postcard stating that you are a Group 1 Settlement Class Member. Settlement Class Members in Group 1 will receive a payment without the need to submit a claim if the Settlement is approved by the Court and becomes effective,&#8221; According to the website.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you appear in Apple&#8217;s records as having received a single Topcase Replacement or Keycap Replacement, you are a Group 2 or Group 3 Settlement Class Member and will receive an email or postcard with a Unique ID that you can use to complete and submit an Online Claim Form that will be pre-populated with information regarding your claim. You may also download and submit a Paper Claim Form or request one from the Claims Administrator, as described below.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Everyone else can. <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.keyboardsettlement.com\/\">Send<\/a> The online claim form can be accessed via the website.<\/p>\n<p>Apple last year (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.courtlistener.com\/docket\/6639860\/in-re-macbook-keyboard-litigation\/?filed_after=&#038;filed_before=&#038;entry_gte=&#038;entry_lte=&#038;order_by=desc\">PDF<\/a>Apple () has agreed to pay $50,000,000 to settle a class-action suit brought by consumers who claimed keyboards on certain MacBook laptops were defective or poorly designed.\u00a0 Apple knew of a defect in its MacBook laptops, according to court papers. &#8220;butterfly&#8221; MacBooks with keyboards, made between 2015-2019 and that it &#8220;fraudulently concealed&#8221; Customers are the design flaw.<\/p>\n<p>The initial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.keyboardsettlement.com\/documents\">Lawsuit<\/a> It was claimed that keyboard malfunctions could lead to &#8220;characters repeating unexpectedly; letters or characters not appearing; and\/or the keys feeling \u2018sticky&#8217; or not responding in a consistent manner.&#8221; Apple has long denied any wrongdoing and reached a settlement in July 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Former Apple\u00a0marketing director Phil Schiller <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tech\/computing\/apples-phil-schiller-on-reinventing-the-new-macbook-pro-keyboard\/\">Submitted<\/a> CNET 2019: The Butterfly Design &#8220;had some things it did really well&#8221;  &#8220;felt more firm and flat under your finger \u2026 some people really like that, but other people weren&#8217;t really happy with that.&#8221; It was phased out by 2019.<\/p>\n<p>A November 2022 court decision means that the\u00a0$50 million settlement can apply to the MacBook owners nationwide, according to a Macworld report. Initially, the settlement was only applicable to New York, Florida and Illinois.
