One of the chapters in here\u2019s about sexting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McDonald&#8217;s was the first to speak before he was interrupted briefly by Carl Jacobs, Vice President of School Board. \u201cNow I\u2019ll just read some of the text here: So before you start sending your naughty masterpieces around the world, take some time to get familiar with photo editing, software, and apps. Digital photos are permanent and impossible to retract once they\u2019re out there, so keep your recognizable features out of them before you share them.\u2019 This is a book for kids. \u2018Don\u2019t forget to crop out your face, hide your birthmarks and scars, and edit out your piercings and tattoos, and don\u2019t forget to tell your sweetie how hot they look. Let them know you appreciate the little gift they\u2019ve sent you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. McDonald?\u2019 Jacobs interrupted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d McDonald&#8217;s replied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to interrupt you at this point. It sounds like you have a concern about a book,\u201d Jacobs declared. \u201cI\u2019d be glad to get connected to the superintendent on our team to go through the appropriate process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d appreciate if you don\u2019t interrupt my time,\u201d McDonald&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. McDonald, I\u2019ve asked you to defer to the superintendent and their team if you have a concern about a book,\u201d Jacobs insisted. \u201cWe have a procedure and a process and a team ready to assist you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jacobs was told by Dave Donley, a member of the Board: \u201cMr. President, I don\u2019t think he\u2019s violated any rules. I mean, he hasn\u2019t used pornography, I mean he hasn\u2019t shown any pornography; he hasn\u2019t shown any bad words.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Donnelly, you can overrule the ruling of the chair if you\u2019d like,\u201d Jacobs replied. \u201cIt\u2019s my determination that we should ask Mr. McDonald to go through the appropriate process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, I understand suggesting that to him and I think that\u2019s fine, but I don\u2019t think he\u2019s said anything that would cause us to cut off his testimony at this point,\u201d Donley responded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we have a past precedent in this boardroom which would support my ruling. You\u2019re welcome and I support your\u00a0right to appeal the ruling of the chair,\u201d Jacobs said.<\/p>\n<p>Jacobs was allowed to close McDonald&#8217;s by the board, which voted 5-2. Only Donley and Andy Holleman, a fellow board member, voted against Jacobs.<\/p>\n<p>McDonald&#8217;s gave McDonald&#8217;s one more chance to speak. She pointed out that the school district still had the book. \u201cdistribution of indecent and pornographic materials to minors is a class c felony.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI keep getting cut off when I just read these books that are \u2014 there are still purchase orders out for these books,\u201d McDonald&#8217;s. \u201cThey\u2019re not old things that were just put on the shelves to rot, they\u2019re things that you\u2019re actively procuring. The first book that I read \u2013 I\u2019m gonna bring some of the FOIA documents that I have next time I\u2019m in here. There\u2019s teachers that are actually using it on their reading lists in their classrooms as part of their class material so I don\u2019t want to hear that we\u2019re not giving this to kids. I was at the police department today and I was talking to them about this and what it comes down to is there\u2019s a gray area where they say that \u2013 you gotta understand that distribution of indecent and pornographic materials to minors is a class c felony.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope that people understand that,\u201d He continued. \u201cSo if there\u2019s the argument that, well, it\u2019s loosely covered by the First Amendment and that\u2019s what you\u2019re hiding behind to give this to students in school, then how can you say, I don\u2019t have First Amendment rights to just read this to adults at a school board meeting. Is this a First Amendment issue or not? I don\u2019t understand how it\u2019s appropriate for kids and it\u2019s not appropriate for the school board. I didn\u2019t even say a bad word. It feels a lot like you don\u2019t want parents to be seeing what\u2019s being given to the kids.
