More than half of girls (57%) report feeling depressed. \u201cpersistently sad or hopeless,\u201d Nearly 33% (30%) of respondents have thought about suicide.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s especially troubling about this report is how it runs counter to today\u2019s conventional wisdom. Our society is supposedly more supportive of women than ever, and provides many opportunities for girls. In certain areas, women perform better than men. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2022\/09\/26\/women-now-outnumber-men-in-the-u-s-college-educated-labor-force\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">College students outnumber them<\/a> In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.us.jll.com\/en\/trends-and-insights\/workplace\/women-now-outnumber-men-in-the-workplace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Workplace<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Strong female protagonists are another important aspect. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elle.com\/culture\/movies-tv\/g19496038\/20-strongest-women-on-tv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">There are many TV and movie stars who use them.<\/a>. In this article, women are represented more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2021\/01\/15\/a-record-number-of-women-are-serving-in-the-117th-congress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Politics<\/a> And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/sports-illustrated\/2020\/10\/06\/the-unrelenting-women-in-sports-daily-cover\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sports<\/a>. Schools encourage girls to reach for the stars and break down glass ceilings. No longer do girls live in a world where they\u2019re expected to find a husband, have children, and submit to lifelong domestic drudgery. They can do almost anything.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the fact that girls are more unhappy than ever raises some serious questions about feminists\u2019 arguments. Do you think doubling down would be a good idea? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/why-cant-we-hate-men\/2018\/06\/08\/f1a3a8e0-6451-11e8-a69c-b944de66d9e7_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Attacks on men<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/12\/01\/940501693\/nasdaq-pushes-to-require-corporate-boards-to-add-more-women-and-minorities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ineffective diversity quotas for the boardroom<\/a>?, and <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/california-york-expand-abortion-access-including-people-states\/story?id=84516978\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Expanded access to abortion<\/a> help young girls?<\/p>\n<p>To be fair, there are those who realize that feminism doesn\u2019t solve the problem. Many women are no longer encouraged and supported by feminist messaging. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/social-trends\/2017\/12\/05\/americans-see-different-expectations-for-men-and-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Feeling pressured <\/a>and shamed into a lifestyle they don\u2019t enjoy. Many women don&#8217;t want to be like the female bosses on TV. <a href=\"https:\/\/fashionjournal.com.au\/life\/time-ditch-girlboss-social-medias-infantilisation-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">feel insulted<\/a> By them. They are not experiencing freedom by working from home but rather, they are experiencing <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6101751\/burnout-women-in-the-workplace-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Boredom and tedium are endless<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, there are other things. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/drnancydoyle\/2021\/07\/13\/we-need-to-talk-about-toxic-femininity-at-work\/?sh=1e9827832769\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Toxic feminism<\/a> that\u2019s making teenage girls sad. What has happened in the past decade and the last few years to drive young women further into despair? From what I\u2019ve witnessed as a high school teacher, this would probably be the rise of social media and transgenderism.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Adolescent girls are particularly affected by social media. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/news\/features\/how-social-medias-toxic-content-sends-teens-into-a-dangerous-spiral\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Addiction and promotion of unattainable ideals<\/a>. The girls scroll through Instagram and TikTok endlessly, looking at the many things they lack, whether it be their intelligence, looks or charisma. Because they fear missing out, girls are constantly bombarded by new trends and fads and act impulsively. Due to the immediacy of these platforms, there is little time to reflect on the content they\u2019re passively internalizing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is often impossible to believe that the featured images of happiness, material success and wealth they are seeing are real. They also have bad habits and ideas that are propagated via social media. For example, consuming too many hours per day on their phone. Online, they are told they can have it all, but in the real world, this just isn\u2019t so.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also the narcissistic component of social media. When a girl is required to post videos, photos, and personal beliefs regularly for her friends and other anonymous followers, self-consciousness can turn into obsessive. Logan Lane, a teenage girl who is obsessed with video and pictures, was able to capture the feelings of a teenager.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Toxic feminism isn&#8217;t the only thing making teenage girls sad.
