Rowling\u2019s<\/a> views on transgender issues, following the publication of two open letters on Wednesday alleging the paper\u2019s past coverage of child sex changes was biased against transgender people.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times published the following: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/02\/16\/opinion\/jk-rowling-transphobia.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">op-ed<\/a> Titled \u201cIn Defense of J.K. Rowling\u201d by columnist Pamela Paul one day after nearly 200 of the newspaper\u2019s contributors signed a joint <a href=\"https:\/\/nytletter.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Letter<\/a> The New York Times is accused of \u201canti-trans bias\u201d And aligning their points of view with \u201cfar-right hate groups,\u201d Which was followed by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glaad.org\/new-york-times-sign-on-letter-from-lgtbq-allied-leaders-and-organizations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Second letter<\/a> GLAAD, an LGBT advocacy group, led the initiative and was signed by activists as well as public figures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur journalism strives to explore, interrogate and reflect the experiences, ideas and debates in society \u2014 to help readers understand them. Our reporting did exactly that and we\u2019re proud of it,\u201d Charlie Stadtlander, a Times spokesperson, said that the Times considered transgender issues when reporting on them. \u201cdeeply and empathetically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times is embroiled in a heated transgender debate after publishing articles in recent weeks that tried to be fair and balanced on the topic of pediatric social and medical transformation.<\/p>\n<p>Two open letters were published Wednesday following backlash. One was from 200 New York Times staff members and contributors to Philip B. Corbett (associate managing editor for standards at The Times), and the other was from GLAAD, an LGBT advocacy group, signed by activists and celebrities.<\/p>\n<p>The first accusation was made against the paper by the letter. \u201ceditorial bias\u201d Its reporting \u201ctransgender, non-binary, and gender nonconforming people,\u201d The second letter accuses the NYT \u201cirresponsible, biased coverage of transgender people.\u201d A number of campaign groups signed the GLAAD Letter, as well as celebrities like Jamela Jamil and Lena Dunham.<\/p>\n<p>A few of these \u201cproblematic\u201d articles the letters mentioned were Emily Bazelon\u2019s \u201cThe Battle Over Gender Therapy,\u201d \u201cWhen Students Change Gender Identity and Parents Don\u2019t Know\u201d Katie Baker, \u201cHow to Make Sense of the New L.G.B.T.Q. Culture War\u201d Ross Douthat<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times published the pro-Rowling article, which shows that they are still open to expressing a variety of views on the issue, despite criticisms. Paul claimed that the abuse suffered by the author of the article was unacceptable. \u201cHarry Potter\u201d Series is not based and her statements are not transphobic. She denounced Rowling\u2019s detractors as a \u201cnoisy fringe of the internet and a number of powerful transgender rights activists and L.G.B.T.Q. lobbying groups.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paul argues that Rowling is not disputing the existence of gender dysphoria and has never voiced opposition to allowing adults to transition under evidence-based medical care, but her defense of biological women\u2019s spaces, skepticism of self-declared \u201cgender identity,\u201d Some have interpreted their support for feminist scholars and detransitioners as a rejection of the status quo. \u201ctransphobic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paul mentions the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/p\/the-witch-trials-of-jk-rowling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">podcast<\/a>, \u201cThe Witch Trials of J.K. Rowling,\u201d Megan Phelps\u2013Roper, a former member at Westboro Baptist Church, will launch the book next week. It includes nine hours worth of interviews with Rowling, which explores her views and the backlash she faced.<\/p>\n<p>Paul claims that Rowling&#8217;s critics are wrong to accuse her of defending herself against them. She is standing up for people who have chosen to remain silent in order to avoid being vilified and job loss.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pushback is often, \u2018You are wealthy. You can afford security. You haven\u2019t been silenced.\u2019 All true.
