Officials resolved to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/evacuation-ordered-ohio-governor-warns-major-explosion-could-send-shrapnel-a-mile-from-derailed-train\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Initiate<\/a> A controlled release of chemicals was made to reduce the chance of an explosion. All residents within one-mile of the crash site were warned to evacuate. However, they were allowed to stay. <a href=\"https:\/\/governor.ohio.gov\/media\/news-and-media\/east-palestine-update-residents-can-safely-return-home-02082023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">permitted<\/a> To return to their homes on February 8<\/p>\n<p>Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), informed Ohio that it was refusing federal assistance to the Biden administration because the agency stated that the incident didn&#8217;t qualify.<\/p>\n<p>Dan Tierney, spokesperson for DeWine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/biden-admin-turns-down-ohios-request-disaster-assistance-toxic-derailment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Submitted<\/a> Fox News that Ohio was able to get some assistance through the\u00a0Department of Health and Human Services that can assist residents who need medical care as a result of the fallout from the derailment and toxic burn.<\/p>\n<p>Tierney stated that DeWine would hold Norfolk Southern &#8211; the company in the accident &#8211; responsible for what happened.\u00a0\u201cThe people of East Palestine need to be made whole,\u201d He concluded.<\/p>\n<p>An earlier statement by the DeWine administration stated that the Biden administration had not responded to requests for federal disaster aid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe DeWine Administration has been in daily contact with FEMA to discuss the need for federal support, however FEMA continues to tell Governor DeWine that Ohio is not eligible for assistance at this time,\u201d DeWine\u2019s office <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/ohio-gov-dewine-bidens-fema-still-denying-assistance-for-east-palestine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a> Earlier in the morning \u201cGovernor DeWine will continue working with FEMA to determine what assistance can be provided.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Norfolk Southern provided the EPA a <a href=\"https:\/\/response.epa.gov\/site\/site_profile.aspx?site_id=15933\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Liste<\/a> Number of cars and chemicals that were involved in the crash. According to the company, all five vehicles containing vinyl chloride were deemed safe. \u201cstabilized\u201d Crews burned the material, creating huge plumes of smoke visible in western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio.<\/p>\n<p>Vinyl chloride is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/about-cancer\/causes-prevention\/risk\/substances\/vinyl-chloride\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Described<\/a> The National Cancer Institute has identified it as a carcinogen that is linked to a rare form liver cancer called hepatic Angiosarcoma. It also includes lymphoma and leukemia as well as various types of brain and lung cancers. Only the Occupational Safety and Health Administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osha.gov\/chemicaldata\/566\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">permits<\/a> exposure of one part per million during an industrial worker\u2019s eight-hour shift.<\/p>\n<p>FEMA claimed in a statement to Fox News that it was in constant contact with DeWine\u2019s office but it would not comment on its decision to reject disaster aid for the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFEMA is in constant contact with the emergency operations center in East Palestine and with the Ohio Emergency Management Agency,\u201d Jeremy Edwards, spokesperson for FEMA. \u201cWe are closely coordinating with EPA, HHS, and the CDC, who are helping to test water and air quality, and to conduct public health assessments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Ben Zeisloft contributed this report.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Joe Biden\u2019s administration rejected a request for federal disaster assistance from Ohio Governor Mike DeWine in response to the train derailment in East Palestine earlier this month.
