The clinic staff member said the studies positing that \u201csocial contagion\u201d may be responsible for clusters of adolescents adopting transgender identities do not use \u201caffirming\u201d language and are, in his \u201cpersonal and professional opinion, invalid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The staff member then suggested that all the girls were genuinely transgender, and it simply took a close friend coming out for them to realize they were too. He said he would try to find some resources for the teacher but would exclude anything that \u201cmay invalidate transgender folks.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a subsequent email, the staff member quoted the clinic\u2019s Adolescent Medicine specialist, Dr. Sarah Garwood, who said, \u201cThe best we can do is affirm, validate and allow for exploration,\u201d adding that \u201cno harm\u201d would be done in affirming a child\u2019s transgender identity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While social transition, which may consist of adopting a new name and opposite-sex pronouns, is often portrayed as a benign way to allow children to express their \u201ctrue selves,\u201d studies show there are good reasons to doubt this narrative. All available <a href=\"https:\/\/acamh.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/camh.12330\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research<\/a> suggests that this seemingly innocuous act of support is an active psychosocial intervention that can make matters worse.<\/p>\n<p>The best available data <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sexologytoday.org\/2016\/01\/do-trans-kids-stay-trans-when-they-grow_99.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indicate<\/a> that roughly 60\u201390% of children who identify as transgender, but do not socially or medically transition, will no longer identify as transgender in adulthood.<\/p>\n<p>After conducting a systematic review of evidence, England\u2019s National Health Service has proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engage.england.nhs.uk\/specialised-commissioning\/gender-dysphoria-services\/user_uploads\/b1937-ii-specialist-service-for-children-and-young-people-with-gender-dysphoria-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new guidelines<\/a> for treating trans-identifying youth and warns that adolescents identifying as transgender may be experiencing a \u201ctransient phase\u201d and that doctors should not encourage them to change their names and pronouns. \u201cSocial transition,\u201d the NHS said, is not a \u201cneutral act\u201d and could have \u201csignificant effects\u201d in terms of \u201cpsychological functioning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The director of Parents Defending Education, Erica Sanzi, told The Daily Wire that the case of the fifth-grade girls is not an isolated incident, and it has brought into sharp focus the debate around the diagnosis and treatment of gender dysphoria in minors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t the first time we\u2019ve seen these kinds of communications between a gender clinic at a children\u2019s hospital and a local school district,\u201d said Sanzi. \u201cWe\u2019ve seen similar correspondence in San Francisco, Chicago, and Philadelphia. St. Louis is the tip of the iceberg.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The St. Louis gender clinic faces intense scrutiny following claims made by former case manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/p\/i-thought-i-was-saving-trans-kids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jamie Reed<\/a>. Her allegations describing the clinic\u2019s practices as \u201cmedically and morally appalling\u201d resulting in \u201cpermanent harm\u201d done to vulnerable children have sparked two separate investigations, one by the Missouri Attorney General\u2019s office and another by the office of Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO).<\/p>\n<p>The controversy has raised serious questions about the ethics and practices of gender clinics, particularly when it comes to working with children. Critics argue that too much emphasis is being placed on affirmation and not enough on exploring the underlying causes of gender dysphoria, which may include trauma, mental health conditions, or social pressures.<\/p>\n<p>These revelations have caused outrage among parents, educators, and healthcare professionals.
