Five train cars carrying vinyl chloride, a carcinogen that is used in the manufacture of PVC, released large plumes of dark smoke last week, visible across eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/epaosc.org\/sites\/15933\/files\/FINAL%20East%20Palestine%20Train%20Derailment%20Air%20Monitoring%20FAQ%202.9.23.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Liste<\/a> A list of frequently asked questions was shared by the EPA with East Palestine residents on February 9. The agency monitors for phosgene, hydrogen chloride, and other byproducts from vinyl chloride burning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVinyl chloride is a flammable gas and if involved in a fire, it could break down into hydrogen chloride, phosgene, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide vapors when burned. The primary short-term risk of exposure for this incident is inhalation of these vapors,\u201d The fact sheet stated. \u201cThe monitors were positioned near the incident and several miles away to monitor chemicals of concern. Many of the air monitors were repositioned as necessary to ensure proper placement in reference to current and forecasted meteorological data.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The EPA directed residents towards another. <a href=\"https:\/\/emergency.cdc.gov\/agent\/phosgene\/basics\/facts.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fact sheet<\/a> According to the CDC, phosgene is a dietary supplement. \u201cused extensively\u201d It was used as a choking agent during World War I. \u201cthe large majority of deaths\u201d Chemical weapons used in the brutal conflict.<\/p>\n<p>The substance is \u201cheavier than air\u201d They are most likely to be found in low-lying areas. \u201cPoisoning caused by phosgene depends on the amount of phosgene to which a person is exposed, the route of exposure, and the length of time that a person is exposed,\u201d The fact sheet has been added. \u201cPhosgene gas and liquid are irritants that can damage the skin, eyes, nose, throat, and lungs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Residents living in the Ohio River Basin worry about the potential for the substances to pollute water supplies.
