Although the recovery and rescue efforts have been hampered by logistical and weather issues, they are still ongoing. The United States of America, European Union, Red Cross and many other countries and organisations have provided assistance. <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/politics-syria-government-turkey-medical-technology-730fb5689d8c92863cdcb8affbd39d2d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Send<\/a> Help, rescue teams, food and shelter are some of the forms of assistance that can be provided to the affected region.<\/p>\n<p>Other important historic sites and roads were also damaged or destroyed in the earthquakes. Gaziantep Castle (a Roman-era fortress that dates back nearly 2,000 years) was one of the affected sites. The quake\u2019s epicenter was in the southern part of the country, in the Gaziantep province, about 75 miles north of Aleppo, Syria. Nine hours later another powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.5 was felt. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/weather\/2023\/02\/07\/earthquake-turkey-syria-causes-damage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">More<\/a> 60 miles north of it. As the name suggests, the Gaziantep province \u2013 the epicenter \u2013 is home to the Gaziantep Castle.<\/p>\n<p>One of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/02\/10\/world\/middleeast\/earthquake-turkey-syria-toll-aid.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The deadliest<\/a> Natural disasters in this century included the earthquake that caused extensive damage to Gaziantep Castle. Sections of the ancient castle\u2019s iron railings and stone walls have collapsed, and large cracks have been observed in some bastions, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/tr\/gundem\/depremde-tarihi-gaziantep-kalesi-de-hasar-gordu\/2807373\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Report<\/a> By the Anadolu Agency, a state agency. The retaining walls have also fallen. Most of the damage to the castle was done from the east, southeast and southern parts. The debris fell on the streets and sidewalks beneath the hilltop on which the castle is perched. It was probably used as a Roman watchtower. Though the mound the castle is built on dates to the Chalcolithic period \u2014 also called the copper age \u2014 about 6,000 years ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gaziantep.bel.tr\/tr\/tarihi-ve-kulturel-eserler\/gaziantep-kalesi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According<\/a> Visit the Gaziantep website. Many repairs and overhauls were made since then. During Justinian\u2019s fortification, the structure took much of its current form of an irregular circular shape with towers and a surrounding moat. Today, 12 towers are present, but at one time there were 36. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gaziantep.bel.tr\/tr\/tarihi-ve-kulturel-eserler\/gaziantep-kalesi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According<\/a> to Ottoman explorer Evliya \u00c7elebi\u2019s travel book. Turkey\u2019s General Directorate for Cultural Assets and Museums <a href=\"https:\/\/kvmgm.ktb.gov.tr\/Eklenti\/92065,gaziantep-castlepdf.pdf?0#:~:text=The%20castle%20was%20first%20built,and%20the%20castle%20was%20expanded.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;<\/a> the castle\u2019s perimeter is nearly 4,000 feet and has a diameter of about 330 feet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Although the castle was severely damaged by recent earthquakes, it has largely survived the past 2,000 years. Justinian&#8217;s reign, which was the first major revival of the castle, saw great territorial expansion for the Byzantine empire. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metmuseum.org\/toah\/hd\/just\/hd_just.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ziel<\/a> It was to restore the empire to its former glory. Justinian, who was well-known for his architectural prowess, led a campaign to rebuild Byzantium&#8217;s ancient capital. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metmuseum.org\/toah\/hd\/just\/hd_just.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According<\/a> The Met Museum\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The castle, which was under the Christian control over the Byzantine empire at the time, was later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.middleeasteye.net\/discover\/turkey-earthquake-historic-gaziantep-castle-destroyed?utm_source=twitter&#038;utm_medium=social&#038;utm_campaign=Social_Traffic&#038;utm_content=ap_o1px63glh7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Passed<\/a> to the Islamic hands of the Umayyad dynasty in 661 A.D.\u00a0 After remaining in Islamic hands for the next 300 years, the Byzantines retook Gaziantep in 962. The city was retaken by the Seljuk Empire just over 100 years later.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The city was renamed several times after the Seljuk conquest. This was during a time of uncertainty. In 1098, the castle was taken by Christian Crusaders. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.castles.nl\/gaziantep-castle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wurde<\/a> part of the Crusader county County of Edessa.
