They\u2019re severely limiting defensive shifts as well. For example, shortstops will not be allowed to play in the right field. <\/p>\n<p>To increase the batting percentage on balls in play, it will be necessary for two fielders to remain on each side of the second bag.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s another one of the most substantial changes; the size of the base itself.<\/p>\n<p>MLB decided that for player safety and the potential for injecting more stolen bases, they\u2019d substantially increase the size of the physical base.<\/p>\n<p>While certainly a legitimate concern, MLB\u2019s change to the base has already created consternation and controversy.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most vocal and prominent critics of the project is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outkick.com\/tag\/boston-red-sox\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Manager of the Boston Red Sox<\/a> Alex Cora. (Matt Lisle\/Twitter)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"h-will-mlb-s-changes-increase-steals\">Will MLB\u2019s Changes Increase Steals?<\/h2>\n<p>The primary purpose of the base is to protect safety, by ensuring that first baseman aren\u2019t sharing too much space with runners.<\/p>\n<p>Another purpose is to increase the likelihood of stealing base attempts. <\/p>\n<p>Cora stated that he had spoken with coaches from minor leagues and that this may not be the case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTalking to the minor league coaches and everybody that used the rules last year \u2014 it\u2019s not that all of the sudden we\u2019re going to steal 100 bags with a guy,\u201d Cora said. \u201cThe value of the out is still in play, and you get 27.
