Amoxicillin oral powder to suspension has been available on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration&#8217;s FDA. <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/scripts\/drugshortages\/dsp_ActiveIngredientDetails.cfm?AI=Amoxicillin%20Oral%20Powder%20for%20Suspension&#038;st=c&#038;tab=tabs-1\" target=\"_blank\">drug shortages list<\/a> Since Oct. 28. Amoxicillin has been a <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/drugs-supplements\/amoxicillin-oral-route\/description\/drg-20075356\" target=\"_blank\">Penicillin antibiotic<\/a> According to the Mayo Clinic, this treatment is for bacterial infections only and can only be obtained with a prescription from a doctor.<\/p>\n<p>However, the FDA clarified in November&#8217;s alert about the amoxicillin shortage that this antibiotic is widely used for treatment of bacterial upper or lower. <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/regulatory-information\/search-fda-guidance-documents\/compounding-certain-beta-lactam-products-shortage-under-section-503a-federal-food-drug-and-cosmetic\" target=\"_blank\">Respiratory infections<\/a> In the pediatric population.&#8221; Last fall, the U.S. started struggling with a major early surge in respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections among children\u2014and RSV often causes\u00a0<a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/philadelphia\/news\/low-supply-of-antibiotic-amoxicillin-as-rsv-flu-spike-in-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\">Secondary bacterial infections<\/a>CBS reports that pharmacists will prescribe amoxicillin for the treatment of a number of conditions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michael Ganio<\/strong>CNN was told by ASHP&#8217;s senior director for pharmacy practice, quality and administration, Jeremy Sullivan, American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), that the high demand is creating a unique medication shortage.\u00a0&#8220;Generally, what we see in <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/10\/28\/health\/amoxicillin-in-short-supply\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">the drug shortages<\/a> is on the production side. In this case, we don&#8217;t have any indication from the manufacturers that they&#8217;re having any sort of difficulty with production,&#8221; He elaborated. &#8220;&#8221;This one is driven by demand, which seems a little unusual. This is also supported by most pharmacists right now. According to the Jackson Pharmacy Professionals survey this shortage is now affecting the supply of other medicines. One respondent stated that there is a danger of a domino effect. &#8220;Amoxicillin plays a vital role in healthcare\u2026 it&#8217;s the most commonly used antibiotic,&#8221; They replied. They said, &#8220;Due to this antibiotic scarcity, it has caused a chain reaction that has led to a shortage of all antibiotics.<\/p>\n<p>The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), has issued guidance. <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cidrap.umn.edu\/resilient-drug-supply\/aap-issues-guidance-alternatives-shortage-amoxicillin\" target=\"_blank\">Alternative treatments<\/a> November was the month that amoxicillin was discontinued. It encouraged the use other antibiotics, such as cephalexin and ceftriaxone for certain infections.
