Although she acknowledged that there have been &#8220;choppy waters,&#8221; she <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-scotland-64647907?at_link_id=0F95B8B2-AD17-11ED-9451-D456FC756850&#038;at_ptr_name=twitter&#038;at_link_origin=BBCScotlandNews&#038;at_link_type=web_link&#038;at_campaign=Social_Flow&#038;at_medium=social&#038;at_campaign_type=owned&#038;at_format=link&#038;at_bbc_team=editorial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">denied<\/a> She is resigning because of the &#8220;latest period of pressure,&#8221; BBC News. <\/p>\n<p><b><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/scottish-law-gender-changes-blocked-british-government\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SCOTTISH LAW EASING BRITISH GENDER CHANGES BLOCKED BY BRITISH GOVERNMENT<\/a><\/b> <\/p>\n<p>A series of mistakes relating to transgender identity and policies brought her under fire from lawmakers and media from both her own party and from opposition parties. <\/p>\n<p>She was the leader and founder of the Scottish National Party. Her party&#8217;s goal of independence for Scotland was a relentless pursuit. But, she did not give up on the quest for a new referendum. <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/11\/23\/uk\/scottish-indepedence-court-ruling-gbr-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Supreme Court of Britain has denied this claim<\/a>. Sturgeon was also an advocate for transgender rights and gender recognition reforms, views that were seen by her critics to be too progressive. <\/p>\n<p>After reports that Isla, a transgender female, was being held in Cornton Vale women&#8217;s prison, the criticism against her transgender policies grew dramatically. Bryson, who identified as Adam Graham and raped two women during his time there in 2016, and 2019. <\/p>\n<p>Despite Sturgeon&#8217;s call to remove Bryson, stating that \u201ca rapist should not be in a women\u2019s prison,&#8221; her critics used the incident as <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2023\/feb\/11\/nicola-sturgeon-faces-fortnight-of-criticism-over-gender-recognition-bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fuel for the fire<\/a> Opposition to the Scottish government&#8217;s changes to gender recognition per the <i>Guardian<\/i>. <\/p>\n<p>Some of these changes include the Gender Recognition Reform Bill.<b> <\/b>This would enable <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nicola-sturgeon-northern-ireland-edinburgh-scotland-7facdaedd9561554c5b390027c63177c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">self-identification<\/a> For people 16 years and older who wish to change their legal gender on their identity documents. Sturgeon&#8217;s Scottish National Party members had opposed her push for the bill. They claimed that the bill did not protect single-sex spaces such as domestic violence shelters or rape crisis centres. They also suggested that the bill could negatively impact the country&#8217;s independence chances. <\/p>\n<p>The legislation was approved by the Scottish Parliament. The Scotland Act provided for rare powers that the U.K. government, under Prime Minister Rishi Sonak, could not use. <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/scottish-law-gender-changes-blocked-british-government\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stop the legislation<\/a> The law was not made into law by citing the evidence it presented &#8220;safety issues for women and children&#8221; It could also cause &#8220;significant complications from having two different gender recognition regimes in the U.K.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>The Scottish public seemed to agree with Sunak&#8217;s decision. The reports on Bryson were published. A poll found that half of respondents supported the U.K. government blocking the bill to reform gender. <\/p>\n<p>Sturgeon was <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/politics-united-kingdom-government-nicola-sturgeon-scotland-2bdeb70e6d847e5b722d051797a36a3fv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vowed<\/a> To take the British government to trial over the bill, which was praised by transgender rights activists and others as a landmark piece legislation.
