Five train cars containing vinyl chloride, a carcinogen that is used in the manufacture of PVC, released massive plumes dark smoke visible across eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntsb.gov\/news\/press-releases\/Pages\/NR20230214.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Press release<\/a> Officials from the NTSB stated that 38 cars were damaged by fire and 12 more cars were also derail. The train was carrying 20 hazardous material vehicles, 11 of them derailed. According to the agency, the train carried 20 hazardous material cars. \u201ccontinues to work with the investigative parties to determine what exactly caused the derailment and to evaluate the emergency response efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Investigators are now investigating the cause of the accident. \u201cSurveillance video from a residence showed what appears to be a wheel bearing in the final stage of overheat failure moments before the derailment,\u201d The press release was continued. \u201cThe wheelset from the suspected railcar has been collected as evidence for metallurgical examination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Video footage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.post-gazette.com\/news\/transportation\/2023\/02\/10\/east-palestine-train-derailment-video-fire-axle-alert\/stories\/202302100070\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Obtained<\/a> The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette revealed that the Norfolk Southern train had covered more than 20 miles in the absence of the rail car axle. It appeared to have caught fire or been shooting sparks. NTSB member Michael Graham confirmed that there were indeed sparks during a previous news conference. \u201cpreliminary indications of mechanical issues\u201d According to a, the axle is rated at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/ohio-train-derailment-video-sparks-flames-well-before\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Report<\/a> CBS Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n<p>NTSB officials also collected top fittings as well as relief valves to be used in the vinyl chloride tanks cars. The wheel bearings are being sent to Washington, D.C., and the fittings will then be evaluated at an NTSB facility located in Texas. Officials from the NTSB will inspect the tanks in Ohio after they are cleaned.<\/p>\n<p>Norfolk Southern is not only responsible for the vinyl chloride release, but also for its other initiatives. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/company-responsible-for-ohio-train-derailment-issues-list-of-cancer-causing-substances-released\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beware<\/a> According to the EPA, a variety of volatile industrial chemicals spilled at the site of the derailment. One train car that contains ethylene glycol monobutylether has been found. \u201cunknown status,\u201d Norfolk Southern says that the amount of ethylhexylacrylate in another vehicle is still acceptable. \u201cpending.\u201d After residents were advised that they could return safely to their homes, the EPA released the complete list.<\/p>\n<p>Governor Mike DeWine (R OH) spoke to journalists at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/air-quality-following-controlled-burn-at-ohio-derailment-site-basically-what-it-was-before-train-crash-governor-claims\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Press conference<\/a> Air tests by Ohio National Guard members sent to the area of the derailment with protective gear purportedly revealed that the air quality was good. \u201cbasically what it was prior to the actual train crash.\u201d Residents still reported concerns about their health in the days following controlled burn. One first responder told in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/unlike-anything-i-have-ever-seen-ohio-first-responder-says-residents-suffer-from-health-issues-after-train-derailment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Interview<\/a> The Daily Wire reported that he was among the many emergency personnel who were there. \u201cbad cough, headaches, sore throat, and diarrhea.\u201d He also said that he was a member of the Advisory Board. \u201cheard stories about dead fish being found in the basin near the crash scene.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Senator J.D.
