The MLB extra innings automated baserunner isn&#8217;t going away. <\/p>\n<p>The goal is to limit extra innings in regular-season games. This rule is not applicable to playoff games. <\/p>\n<p>It is a great idea. While it\u2019s fun to see a game in the 18th inning from the comfort of your couch, the reality is that baseball games are long. (Photo via Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There\u2019s just no need to do that, especially during a 162-game season when single games are generally of minor consequence. <\/p>\n<p>Before I go on, let me just say that I want to take a quick tangent. Please stop referring to the runner as &#8220;the&#8221; for the love and honor of God. \u201cghost runner.\u201d Back in the day, when you played ball with your buddies, there generally weren\u2019t enough players to bat and run the bases. <\/p>\n<p>This is how the \u201cghost runner\u201d Oder \u201cghosty\u201d The runner was theoretically kept alive in situations where there were no human beings on the bases. <\/p>\n<p>Major League Baseball has a second base runner. A ghost. It is a real human being. <\/p>\n<p>Und, \u201cghosty\u201d The player represented had already achieved that base. The rules place this player there. This player is placed there because of the rules in multiple ways. \u201cghost runner.\u201d Stop calling him that. <\/p>\n<p>Tangent over. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-mlb-finally-embracing-modern-times-with-extra-innings-baserunner\">MLB now embraces modern times by adding extra innings for baserunners <\/h2>\n<p>While I was a baseball player growing up, I never believed that the rules should be changed. \u201cthat\u2019s the way it\u2019s always been.\u201d I don\u2019t go to games to watch pitchers hit. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13memphis.com\/news\/trending\/mlb-commissioner-rob-manfred-announces-agreement-universal-dh\/575VUYKLPBHZLJK24EG25FXZ6E\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Universal DH was long overdue<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m also not sitting through a 6-hour game in the middle of July. I have no issues with the automatic runners. <\/p>\n<p>Robot umps? Good. You need to make sure you get your calls right. It\u2019s more important to baseball than practically any rule in any sport. Yet, it\u2019s the one we allow the most human control.
