Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, isn&#8217;t causing an egg shortage by selling fake eggs.<\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s one of the online conspiracy theories about the soaring price of eggs and, more, the sudden drop in production.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBill Gates Invested In Artificial Eggs a Decade Before Egg Shortage,\u201d One website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegatewaypundit.com\/2023\/01\/bill-gates-invested-artificial-eggs-decade-egg-shortage\/\">reported<\/a> last month. Ah, the long game of waiting 10 years. He\u2019s smart, that Gates.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/factchecks\/2023\/jan\/25\/instagram-posts\/the-bill-gates-egg-shortage-conspiracy-isnt-all-it\/\">Politifact<\/a> The claim was investigated and it was found that Gates has made investments in several fake food companies in the past 10 years, including Beyond Meats, Impossible Foods, and others. Gates has been investing in faux food companies ever since 2020. \u201cheld the title of the nation\u2019s largest private farmland owner,\u201d Owning more than 250,000 acres of farmland in over a dozen states<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no evidence these investments are linked to a nationwide shortage in chicken and egg products,\u201d Politifact wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, Politifact leans left as noted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allsides.com\/news-source\/politifact\">All Sides<\/a>The bias of outlets is rated by. Also, keep in mind that President Barack Obama&#8217;s 2009 statement, \u201cIf you like your health care plan, you can keep it,\u201d Politifact, \u201chis description of his plan is accurate, and we rate his statement True.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2013, the fact-checking group finally admitted what we all knew, deeming Obama\u2019s statement it\u2019s \u201cLie Of The Year,\u201d Forbes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/theapothecary\/2013\/12\/27\/in-2008-politifacts-2013-lie-of-the-year-that-you-could-keep-your-health-plan-under-obamacare-it-rated-true\/?sh=2d0aa7387c14\">reported<\/a>. You are invited to take a few shakes of salt with you.<\/p>\n<p>There are other claims about lower egg production, including posts on social media from backyard chicken owners who say their hens are laying fewer eggs \u2014 or none at all.<\/p>\n<p>Belinda Woodruff, Makin Magic Ranch in Weatherford Texas, contacted me after I had written a piece about eggs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI raise chickens and for quite a few months they haven\u2019t been laying. They usually slow down in winter, but I have a couple of breeds that lay pretty much all year and even they stopped,\u201d She said. \u201cI watched a video recently of someone else whose chickens stopped laying. Then I find out there\u2019s hundreds of videos from all over on TikTok whose chickens have also stopped laying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso there\u2019s a shortage of eggs in the stores. Why doesn\u2019t some lab test the chicken feed to see what\u2019s going on? I believe it\u2019s all on purpose. The only chickens I have laying right now are the few that I let run around loose in three fenced yard around my house. I have a 10 acre ranch,\u201d Woodruff wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Politifact also looked into the matter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no evidence that commercial feed is being sabotaged to negatively impact the number of eggs that backyard hens are laying, multiple experts said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also, check out this fact-checking web site <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/factchecks\/2023\/feb\/07\/facebook-posts\/chicken-feed-being-sabotaged-elaborate-plot-no-the\/\">said,<\/a> \u201cTractor Supply and other major feed suppliers targeted by these claims confirmed that they haven\u2019t changed their formulas. \u2026 We rate this False.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, Woodruff\u2019s story is intriguing. She\u2019s seen firsthand that chickens are producing fewer eggs. What can we explain this phenomenon? \u201cExperts we spoke with cited a variety of factors that may hinder backyard hens from laying eggs, including improper nutrition, infection and stress,\u201d Politifact wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Although 2023 may seem like a stressful time, are all the chickens truly stressed? Doesn\u2019t seem all that plausible.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a fact that doesn\u2019t need to be checked. According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data in December, large grade A eggs cost $4.25 per dozen compared to $1.79 a year earlier. A dozen eggs would cost $1.33 in August 2020, by the way.<\/p>\n<p>Megan McArdle is a Washington Post columnist, and the author of \u201cThe Up Side of Down: Why Failing Well Is the Key to Success,\u201d Her magic math skills were evident. She did not blame President Joe Biden, unlike the other presidents. \u201cPutin\u2019s price hike\u201d but explained that chickens have gotten sick, and that\u2019s leading to the higher price.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe truth is that U.S. egg production is still recovering from a bout of avian flu that has devastated flocks in the United States and Europe,\u201d She <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2023\/02\/07\/egg-prices-history-relative-economics\/\">Write<\/a>. \u201cAnd while activists and senators are puzzled by how a 29 percent decline in egg production can lead to a much larger increase in the price of eggs, agricultural economist Jayson Lusk says that\u2019s exactly what you would expect with a product for which demand is relatively insensitive to price changes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Farm Action, an advocacy group for farmers, has a different theory about the price rise.
