After taking off from Maui, the plane reached 2,200 feet. However, it dropped to 1,400 feet during an intense storm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt felt like you were climbing to the top of a roller coaster. It was at that point,\u201d Williams, who was a student of aviation at college, shared his story. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/travel\/article\/united-777-plunge-takeoff-hawaii\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNN<\/a>. \u201cThere were a number of screams on the plane. Everybody knew that something was out of the ordinary, or at least that this was not normal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/theaircurrent.com\/aviation-safety\/united-maui-dive-ua1722-close-call\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Air Current<\/a>The terrifying dive reached a descent speed of nearly 8,600 feet per second.<\/p>\n<p>Williams and his wife sat with their 10-year old daughter and 7 year-old son.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the plane started to nosedive, multiple screams are being let out, at that point,\u201d Williams said. \u201cYou\u2019re trying your best to maintain your composure \u2013 there\u2019s obviously kids on the flight \u2013 nobody really knows what\u2019s going on, but at the same time, you\u2019re concerned. You don\u2019t know if this is an issue, but it was certainly out of the ordinary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s tense, you don\u2019t really have a chance to speak or to conjure up words, you\u2019re just kind of gripping the seat and praying under your breath,\u201d He added. \u201cI asked her later and sure enough \u2026 we were praying for a miracle, because we felt like this could be it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eight weeks after the flight, Williams\u2019 father showed him reports on the flight. \u201cNow that I know, statistically what had happened, and that we were about 5 to 5.2 seconds from hitting the water, you know, I\u2019m definitely counting my blessings,\u201d He stated. \u201cI\u2019m reminded that when my wife and I pray together before the flights that, you know, there\u2019s a God that\u2019s here in that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The family flew home from Ohio after the flight landed safely in San Francisco. The United flight, a Boeing that could seat 364 passengers, flew two and a-half hours later to Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou read about these things, but then when you get to experience it, it\u2019s just, sobering, you know.
