The explosion caused a large explosion. Critics expressed their disapproval that officials were allowing people to return home.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 50 cars on a Norfolk Southern Corp. train were thrown off-track, setting off a fire. The train\u00a0had departed Madison, Illinois, and was headed to Conway, Pennsylvania. The train carried 14 cars containing 25,000 to 33,000 gallons each of vinyl chloride.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/about-cancer\/causes-prevention\/risk\/substances\/vinyl-chloride\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Cancer Institute<\/a> vinyl chloride exposure is associated with an increased risk of a rare form of\u00a0liver cancer (hepatic angiosarcoma), as well as \u201cprimary liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma), brain and lung cancers, lymphoma, and leukemia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA team of experts\u201d The chemicals were ignited by the ignition of the sparks on February 5. \u201cprevent a potentially catastrophic explosion following a train derailment,\u201d The Wall Street Journal<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/j5tam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> reported<\/a> On February 6,<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">No protests. On February 8, officials said that residents of East Palestine could return home.<\/p>\n<p>The Environmental Protection Agency later informed Norfolk Southern that ethylene glycol monobutyl ether, ethylhexyl acrylate and isobutylene were also in the rail cars.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe basically nuked the town with chemicals so we could get a railroad open,\u201d Sil Caggiano, a hazardous materials specialist, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wkbn.com\/news\/local-news\/east-palestine-train-derailment\/3-additional-chemicals-discovered-on-east-palestine-train-derailment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> WKBN. \u201cI was kind of surprised when they quickly told the people they could go back home, but then said if they wanted their homes tested, they could have them tested. I would\u2019ve far rather they did all the testing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of what-ifs, and we\u2019re gonna be looking at this thing 5, 10, 15, 20 years down the line and wondering, \u2018Gee, cancer clusters could pop up, well water could go bad,\u2019\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Three new dangerous chemicals were found on the train that derailed in East Palestine, Ohio:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We basically nuked a town with chemicals so we could get a railroad open\u2026 I was surprised when they quickly told the people they could go back home.&#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/knBBhR07Q5\">pic.twitter.com\/knBBhR07Q5<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Citizen Free Press (@CitizenFreePres) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CitizenFreePres\/status\/1625166530022612993?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 13, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe biggest question remaining is what, if anything, is still being released from the site, first and foremost,\u201d Peter DeCarlo, an environmental health professor at Johns Hopkins University, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2023\/02\/12\/east-palestine-ohio-derailment-residents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Washington Post<\/a>. \u201cIf there are still residual chemical emissions, then that still presents a danger for people in the area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caggiano recommended residents get a health check-up so they would have a record to compare with their health years from now.<\/p>\n<p>Local resident Eric Whitining told the Post, \u201cFor a small town, we have to trust them, because what else do we have to do?
