Vinyl chloride has been linked with cancers of the brain and lungs, blood, lymphatic system and liver, according to the National Cancer Institute.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, the EPA\u2019s letter mentions other potentially hazardous chemicals in those derailed tankers.<\/p>\n<p>It specifically notes the presence ethylene glycol monobutylether and ethylhexylacrylate.<\/p>\n<p>The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\u2019s online chemical database <a href=\"https:\/\/cameochemicals.noaa.gov\/chemical\/3412\">Notes<\/a> That the chemical solvent ethylene g monobutylether \u201ccan cause serious or permanent injury.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIngestion or skin contact causes headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness,\u201d The website provides information about the chemical, which can be found in many household products.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/cameochemicals.noaa.gov\/chemical\/8674#:~:text=A%20clear%20colorless%20liquid%20with,Flash%20point%20180%C2%B0F.\">Similar chemical database<\/a> Note that 2-ethylhexylacrylate can be used to make plastics and paints for contact lenses. \u201ccan cause significant irritation\u201d It can explode at high temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>It says that &#8220;a href=&#8221;https:\/\/cameochemicals.noaa.gov\/chemical\/3667#:~:text=Isobutylene%20is%20a%20colorless%20gas,the%20liquid%20can%20cause%20frostbite.&#8221;>isobutylene<\/a>A liquified gas that is used to make aviation fuel. <a href=\"https:\/\/cameochemicals.noaa.gov\/chemical\/3667\">Can incapacitate<\/a> In some cases, it can even asphyxiate people who are exposed to it.<\/p>\n<p>Butylacrylate is, however, a href=&#8221;https:\/\/cameochemicals.noaa.gov\/chemical\/2674&#8243;>described<\/a> It is listed in the database as a potentially dangerous substance and a potential source of permanent or serious injury. It is used in the manufacture of sealants, paints, adhesives and other substances.<\/p>\n<p>The Epoch Times contacted the EPA to get more details about the potential health and environmental risks posed by chemicals involved in the train derailment.<\/p>\n<h2>Norfolk Southern Responds<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cNorfolk Southern received the EPA\u2019s letter and we have confirmed to them that we have and will continue to perform or finance environmental monitoring and remediation. Our hazmat team was in East Palestine within an hour of the incident, and the response continues today in close coordination with the Ohio and U.S. EPA, NTSB [National Transportation and Safety Board], and other federal, state, and local agencies,\u201d A spokesperson for Norfolk Southern spoke to The Epoch Times via email on February 13, 2013.<\/p>\n<p>The spokesperson directed The Epoch Times towards the NTSB to obtain any information on the cause of the crash.<\/p>\n<p>The agency announced on February 6, that it was opening an investigation into the incident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdditional information will be issued when available,\u201d The Epoch Times received an email from the NTSB on February 13, 2013.<\/p>\n<p>While some online influencers have said Norfolk Southern paid only $25,000 to the town of East Palestine, the company\u2019s spokesperson said that sum was just an initial donation to the Red Cross to establish a shelter at East Palestine High School.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn total, more than $1 million has been distributed directly to families to cover costs related to the evacuation,\u201d A February 13th press release by the company stated this.<\/p>\n<p>EPA\u2019s letter describes Norfolk Southern as potentially liable under the federal government\u2019s Superfund law.<\/p>\n<p>It wouldn\u2019t be the first Norfolk Southern derailment site to end up under that regime.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cumulis.epa.gov\/supercpad\/CurSites\/csitinfo.cfm?id=0406770\">One derailment<\/a> Decatur, Alabama, was the site of an incident involving hydrofluoric acid, a chemical which can be fatal if inhaled in large amounts.<\/p>\n<h2>Local Waterways<\/h2>\n<p>The EPA\u2019s letter states that \u201cmaterials related to the incident\u201d They were seen rushing into storm drains.<\/p>\n<p>According to the letter, chemicals released during the event were also detected in local waterways including the Ohio River.<\/p>\n<p>The Ohio River watershed, which spans 14 states, is home to 25,000,000 people. The river eventually flows into the Mississippi River.<\/p>\n<p>According to West Virginia American Water, it has not observed any water quality changes in the Ohio River portions it monitors. <a href=\"https:\/\/wchstv.com\/news\/local\/wva-american-water-monitors-water-quality-along-ohio-river-following-train-derailment\">WCHS<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Buttigieg Under Fire<\/h2>\n<p>Some lawmakers have reacted strongly to the derailment, with some blaming Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg (formerly a McKinsey consultant, and mayor of an Indiana college town).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is another transportation failure under Mayor Pete\u2019s leadership. Where is he?\u201d Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz.
