So he took the manilla folder and put it over so it would keep the light down so he could sleep at night,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/02\/12\/politics\/trump-lawyer-timothy-parlatore-classified-material\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNN interview with Parlatore<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s just this folder. It says \u2018Classified Evening Summary\u2019 on it. It\u2019s not a classification marking. It\u2019s not anything that is controlled in any way. There is nothing illegal about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Parlatore is representing Trump in Jack Smith\u2019s special counsel investigation into the former president\u2019s handling of government documents after leaving office and circumstances leading up to the breach of the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.<\/p>\n<p>CNN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/02\/10\/politics\/trump-classified-records-laptop\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Previously reported<\/a>According to unnamed sources the folder was given by the Justice Department to include classified markings and a laptop belonging an aide to Trump sometime in December or January after a May subpoena.<\/p>\n<p>CNN was reportedly assured by Parlatore that the aide copied pages with classified markings onto his laptop. \u201cWe\u2019ve tried to do searches of all the relevant places, and anytime we\u2019ve found anything, we\u2019ve immediately turned it over,\u201d He said.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has denied all wrongdoing. He has been severely critical of the investigation ever since it entered the public\u2019s view in August 2022 when the FBI raided Trump\u2019s residence at Mar-a-Lago, the former president\u2019s Florida resort, to recover classified documents that Trump had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/doj-declined-to-monitor-biden-attorneys-search-for-classified-docs-at-presidents-home-report-says\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Affirmatively refused<\/a> To hand over to government<\/p>\n<p>Contrary to Parlatore\u2019s claim of cooperation, Trump responded to Attorney General Merrick Garland\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/from-the-hague-to-obamas-irs-scandal-meet-jack-smith-the-new-special-counsel-to-investigate-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Smith was appointed as special counsel<\/a> Just days after Trump declared his 2024 presidential campaign, by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/trump-says-he-wont-partake-special-counsel-investigation-slams-as-worst-politicization-of-justice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox News Channel<\/a> He \u201cwon\u2019t partake\u201d In the inquiry.
