Uh, \u201cpeople of color\u201d People often live in cities and have fewer animals there than rural areas. \u201cpeople of color\u201d Also, live.<\/p>\n<p>But what\u2019s a woke biologist to do? In the endless quest to find racism everywhere (and let\u2019s be clear, racism exists all across the world), biologists have turned to the animal world.<\/p>\n<p>The new <a href=\"https:\/\/rlearley.people.ua.edu\/uploads\/2\/5\/6\/9\/25693686\/schmidt_2022_systemic_racism_alters_wildlife_genetic_diversity.pdf\">Study<\/a> Titled \u201cSystemic Racism Alters Wildlife Genetic Diversity\u201d It is claimed that the government has still not removed minorities from areas in which they were forced to live.<\/p>\n<p>According to the study, areas with a high percentage of whites live in areas that have greater animal diversity than areas that are predominantly black.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the United States, systemic racism has had lasting effects on the structure of cities, specifically due to government-mandated redlining policies that produced racially segregated neighborhoods that persist today,\u201d The study concluded.<\/p>\n<p>However, the second sentence admits that the obvious is: \u201cHowever, it is not known whether varying habitat structures and natural resource availability associated with racial segregation affect the\u00a0demographics and evolution of urban wildlife populations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After thousands of words, this passage concludes the study: \u201cIf models including both\u00a0covariates explain more variation than models with either covariate, this suggests that the effect of neighborhood racial composition and environmental disturbance on genetic composition are to some extent independent. If the opposite is true, it is more likely that racial composition affects genetic composition due to its correlation with environmental disturbance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a lot of words.<\/p>\n<p>Two of the researchers, University of Manitoba biologist Colin Garroway and Chlo\u00e9 Schmidt from the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research, also conclude that cities have less animal diversity.<\/p>\n<p>They say that several factors \u2014 such as densely populated areas, lots of pavement, railroads, and nighttime lights \u2014 may contribute to the lower diversity of wildlife in non-white neighborhoods.<\/p>\n<p>Ya\u2019 think?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur results suggest that neighborhoods that are largely non-White support smaller, more fragmented, less genetically diverse wildlife populations. Notably, the effects of racial composition and habitat degradation on genetic composition were consistent across the majority of taxa regardless of urban sample locality,\u201d Researchers wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have shown that the well-described environmental patterns associated with historic and ongoing racial segregation in US cities have caused parallel patterns in wildlife demography detectable with genetic data. It is clear that systemic racism is altering the demography of urban wildlife populations on a national scale in ways that can shape the evolutionary processes acting on them and the probability of long-term persistence in cities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese results are concerning because urban biodiversity is important for human mental and physical well-being, and disparities in access to nature build on existing health-related environmental disamenities in predominantly non-White neighborhoods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEquitably distributing and increasing the amount and connectivity of natural habitat in cities can therefore benefit human well-being while simultaneously helping build resilience in urban wildlife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is a new study out that shows there is more animal diversity in rural areas, than in urban areas.
