This is the damned if you do part. However, we are not allowing Starlink to be used for long-range drone strikes. This is the damned if you don\u2019t part.\u201d Last week, SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/tech\/spacex-starlink-ukraine-drones-russia-b2278965.html?r=86785\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Doubled down<\/a> in the wake of reports that Ukraine\u2019s military had used Starlink to control drones.<\/p>\n<p>Starlink, which was permitted to be used by Ukraine for broadband internet for hospitals, banks, and families affected by Russia\u2019s invasion, was \u201cnever never meant to be weaponized,\u201d Shotwell stated, &#8220;Additionally, \u201cHowever, Ukrainians have leveraged it in ways that were unintentional and not part of any agreement. \u2026 There are things that we can do to limit their ability to do that. There are things that we can do, and have done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This prompted MykailoPodolyak (senior adviser to Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zilensky) to respond. \u201cA year of [Ukrainian] resistance &#038; companies have to decide: Either they are on the side of [Ukraine] &#038; the right to freedom, and don\u2019t seek ways to do harm. Or they are on RF\u2019s side &#038; its \u2018right\u2019 to kill &#038; seize territories. Please restore the full functionality of your Starlink satellites. Defense from a genocidal invasion is not an offensive capability. It\u2019s survival. Innocent lives will be lost. You can help. Gen. John Shaw was appointed deputy commander of U.S. Space Command. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/10\/28\/space-war-ukraine-pentagon-russia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a>, \u201cI am certain that my counterpart in Russia, whoever that is, is not very happy with Starlink, as it\u2019s assisting Ukraine. And with commercial imagery, such as Maxar\u2019s products, that are plastering all over the world news the things that are going on, I don\u2019t think they\u2019re very happy about that either.
