Politico deliberately distorted what we said. It was clear in paragraph five.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a class=\"c-link c-link--focus-visible\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/f\/?id=00000175-4393-d7aa-af77-579f9b330000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/f\/?id=00000175-4393-d7aa-af77-579f9b330000\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">Letter from 51 ex-intelligence officials<\/a>\u00a0came out in the days leading up to the 2020 presidential election, warning that reporting about the laptop\u2019s alleged contents \u201chas all the classic earmarks of a Russian information operation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the signees stated that they were unsure if emails being sent at the time were authentic and insisted that there was no evidence of Russian involvement, POLITICO first reported the letter. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2020\/10\/19\/hunter-biden-story-russian-disinfo-430276\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Publication of a headline<\/a> This was the claim that the story was made by former intelligence officers. \u201cRussian disinfo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then-candidate Joe Biden, Hunter\u2019s father, used the letter to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house-gop-demand-records-from-ex-intel-officials-about-hunter-biden-laptop-letter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The laptop story is a mystery<\/a> During one his debates with the then-President Donald Trump. \u201cThere are 50 former national intelligence folks who said that what he\u2019s accusing me of is a Russian plan,\u201d Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/joe-biden-says-hunter-biden-laptop-story-is-russian-plan-despite-lack-of-evidence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">During the debate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Washington Post stated that Clapper was contacted after House Republicans led by Jim Jordan (R OH), sent Clapper along with 11 other signers. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/jim-jordan-puts-a-dozen-intel-veterans-on-notice-over-hunter-biden-laptop-letter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Requests for documents or testimony<\/a> regarding the letter \u2014 a development first reported by The Daily Wire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one who has spent time in Washington should be surprised that journalists and politicians willfully or unintentionally misconstrue oral or written statements,\u201d Thomas Fingar, a former State Department official, was another signer of this letter and was contacted directly by The Washington Post. \u201cThe statement we signed was carefully written to minimize the likelihood that what was said would be misconstrued, and to provide a clear written record that could be used to identify and disprove distortions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new report also revealed other interesting tidbits, such as that Clapper claimed he didn&#8217;t know the way Biden described the letter in the presidential debate. The Washington Post reported that its Fact Checker found out that Michael Morell (former CIA Deputy director) organized the letter.<\/p>\n<p>The laptop, which allegedly was abandoned at a Delaware computer repair shop before the FBI obtained it, contains details about Hunter Biden\u2019s personal life and financial affairs. John Paul Isaac (the repairman who got the laptop), sued POLITICO as well as others for defamation. <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/05\/03\/repairman-who-revealed-hunter-biden-laptop-sues-schiff-cnn-politico-beast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">They are accused of making false claims<\/a> He spread Russian disinformation. The Daily Beast, which was later named as one of the new outlets in the lawsuit, later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/daily-beast-apologizes-john-paul-mac-isaac-hunter-biden-laptop?intcmp=tw_fnc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Apologize<\/a> Thank you for reporting that the laptop wasn&#8217;t working. \u201cstolen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>POLITICO defends its reporting regarding the letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe article fairly and accurately reported on \u2014 and summarized \u2014 the intelligence officials\u2019 letter,\u201d The statement was as follows: \u201cMore specifically, the headline is a fair summary of their allegations, the subhead offers additional context, and the first paragraph of the article hyperlinks to the letter itself, allowing readers to draw their own conclusion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many of the contents of this laptop story have been updated since it was first published more than two decades ago.\u00a0<a class=\"c-link c-link--focus-visible\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/03\/30\/hunter-biden-laptop-data-examined\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/03\/30\/hunter-biden-laptop-data-examined\/\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">Analysed and confirmed authentic<\/a>. Hunter Biden\u2019s lawyers recently began to send letters to state and federal officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/hunter-biden-demands-criminal-investigation-into-several-figures-after-admitting-infamous-laptop-is-his\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">For individuals to be subject to investigations<\/a> involved in sharing the contents on the laptop with the media.
