Some developed a range of symptoms, including\u00a0liquid diarrhea and puffy faces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOut of nowhere, he just started coughing really hard, just shut down, and he had liquid diarrhea and just went very fast,\u201d Holzer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wkbn.com\/news\/local-news\/east-palestine-train-derailment\/health-concerns-mounting-as-animals-become-sick-after-train-derailment\/\">Telled<\/a> The outlet of one his animals.\u00a0\u201cSmoke and chemicals from the train, that\u2019s the only thing that can cause it, because it doesn\u2019t just happen out of nowhere,\u201d He concluded. \u201cThe chemicals that we\u2019re being told are safe in the air, that\u2019s definitely not safe for the animals \u2026 or people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Authorities have said the train was carrying\u00a0highly toxic vinyl chloride, hydrogen chloride, and other hazardous materials before it derailed. The\u00a0Norfolk Southern Railroad train derailed while it was heading to Pennsylvania on Feb. 3.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Kevin Crist, the director of Ohio University\u2019s Air Quality Center, said that\u00a0vinyl chloride is carcinogenic, causing cancer of the liver and order organs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBreathe those in under heavy concentrations, and it\u2019s really bad for you,\u201d Crist <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Health\/toxins-ohio-train-derailment-posed-deadly-threats-residents\/story?id=96978394\">Telled<\/a> ABC News. \u201cIt\u2019s like an acid mist. It\u2019s not something that you want to be around in high concentrations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy video camera footage shows my chickens were perfectly fine before they started this burn, and as soon as they started the burn, my chickens slowed down and they died,\u201d Amanda Breshears, North Lima (Ohio), told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc27.com\/news\/north-lima-woman-finds-chickens-dead-tuesday-questions-chemical-release-from-train\/\">ABC27<\/a>. \u201cIf it can do this to chickens in one night, imagine what it\u2019s going to do to us in 20 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was also reported that fish were dying in the waterways of East Palestine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeslie Run comes out of East Palestine and that goes into Bull Creek, which then goes into North Fork. And we know for sure that there has been some fish kill in Leslie Run and Bull Creek, and some portions of the North Fork,\u201d WKBN spoke with Matthew Smith, regional scenic river manager assistant for the Division of Natural Areas and Preserves.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to those reports, Kurt Kollar with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency\u2019s Office of Emergency Response, said in a news conference that those claims are being monitored.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe knew at the onset of this incident there was impact to Sulfur Creek and waters of the state of Ohio. Since that point in time, we have been able to successfully control that runoff and contain the water and either treat it in place, along with a robust sampling program for the water quality,\u201d Kollar stated.<\/p>\n<p>The fire was started as part of an initiative. \u201ccontrolled release\u201d Authorities are taking precautions to avoid a tanker accident that could have led to an explosion. <a href=\"https:\/\/governor.ohio.gov\/media\/news-and-media\/east-palestine-update-evacuation-area-extended-controlled-release-of-rail-car-contents-planned-for-3-30-pm-02062023\"><\/a>. However, one expert in hazardous materials expressed reservations.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Nuked a Town\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cWe basically nuked a town with chemicals so we could get a railroad open,\u201d Sil Caggiano, a specialist in hazardous materials, spoke during an interview <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wkbn.com\/news\/local-news\/east-palestine-train-derailment\/3-additional-chemicals-discovered-on-east-palestine-train-derailment\/\">With<\/a> WKBN was used to refer to the controlled burning.<\/p>\n<p>Other than\u00a0vinyl chloride\u2014used to manufacture PVC\u2014Caggiano noted that the train had\u00a0ethylhexyl acrylate on board. Puskar\/AP Photo)<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI was surprised when they quickly told the people they can go back home, but then said if they feel like they want their homes tested they can have them tested. I would\u2019ve far rather they did all the testing,\u201d Caggiano spoke to the media outlet.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that there could be an increase in cancer rates in the future near East Palestine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of what ifs, and we\u2019re going to be looking at this thing 5, 10, 15, 20 years down the line and wondering, \u2018Gee, cancer clusters could pop up, you know, well water could go bad,\u201d Caggiano said.<\/p>\n<p>James Justice, an official with the Environmental Protection Agency, stated to the New York Post that he has been running constant air-monitoring testing in the area due to reports of dead animals. They found that no toxic threats have been monitored in the area, while residents were told it\u2019s safe to return home, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Some East Palestine residents, however, told us otherwise.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2023\/02\/12\/east-palestine-ohio-derailment-residents\/\">The Washington Post<\/a> that they\u2019ve suffered deleterious health effects after returning home. Maura Todd, one of the victims, stated that she and her family experienced nausea and headaches this week. She wants to leave.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve watched every news conference and I haven\u2019t heard anything that makes me think that this is a data-driven decision,\u201d Todd, aged 44, said it to the outlet. \u201cWe don\u2019t feel like we have a whole lot of information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Epoch Times contacted the EPA to get their opinion.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Animals are dying or becoming sick from the East Palestine train derailment and chemical-fire accident.
