And things, sadly, don\u2019t get better from there.<\/p>\n<p>Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher play Debbie and Peter, singletons who hooked up once 20 years ago and decided they\u2019re better off as friends.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>Because it&#8217;s written in the script. Stop asking dumb questions!<\/p>\n<p>They chat and zoom from their separate coastal homes, while living out their movie-like lives. She\u2019s an overprotective L.A. mum who makes all the safe choices for her family.\u00a0He\u2019s a Big Apple-based consultant who knows how to rebrand his clients.<\/p>\n<p>They swap coasts as Debbie is offered a college spot in New York. Peter leaves \u00a0for Los Angeles, where he must care for Debbie\u2019s son (Wesley Kimmel, Jimmy\u2019s nephew).<\/p>\n<p>These seemingly-unlovable lovers may still feel for one another after all these years. Events in the film may even reignite their passions.<\/p>\n<p>Get \u2026 out!<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned=\"\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/CofU3hRu9s6\/?utm_source=ig_embed&#038;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\">\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Rom-coms are supposed to be predictable. Problem with \u201cYour Place or Mine\u201d It begins with the film&#8217;s artificial, suffocating feel. It feels like the film is running at an inappropriate speed, or that Aline Brosh McKenna, the first-time director of the film, is in far too much control.<\/p>\n<p>Even\u00a0old pros like Witherspoon and Kutcher can\u2019t bring life to their characters.<\/p>\n<p>The situation gets worse when the sidekicks from rom-coms join the fray. Tig Notaro\u2019s droll line readings can be a hoot, but she\u2019s given nothing to work with as the sassy confidante for both Debbie and Peter.<\/p>\n<p>Steve Zahn is so good at everything (especially). \u201cThe White Lotus\u201d) is embarrassing as Debbie\u2019s neighbor, whose gardening obsession isn\u2019t remotely funny.<\/p>\n<p>It has never happened before.<\/p>\n<p>Nor is hearing Peter try out a litany of nicknames for Debbie\u2019s son. \u201cYour Place or Mine\u201d It is filled with flat running gags.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Reese Witherspoon &#038; Ashton Kutcher: How well do they know each other&#8217;s movies? <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Mi34ZgYRGA\">pic.twitter.com\/Mi34ZgYRGA<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Netflix (@netflix) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/netflix\/status\/1623456648260993025?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 8, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The film\u2019s saving grace? Zoe Chao plays Peter\u2019s ex-flame who mysteriously bonds with Debbie during her NYC jaunt. Chao flips the script on its head, creating smiles in places where none should be.<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise, we\u2019re left with head-scratching plot details, a love interest for Debbie (Jesse Williams) who doesn\u2019t make much sense and a third-act development meant to split the couple in question that\u2019s resolved in a blink.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re gonna trace the Rom-Com Handbook, at least pretend you\u2019re giving it your all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HiT or Miss<\/strong>: \u201cYour Place or Mine\u201d It wastes a cute couple and a frisky premise, hoping that the rom-com genre will soon cease to exist.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What if you had all the elements of a good rom-com but left out the most important one?
