The book says so. \u201cProbably no one will be surprised if this estimate is off by a factor of 10 or even 100.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Biodiversity-Environmental-Philosophy-Introduction-Cambridge-ebook\/dp\/B000SHMQES\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Biodiversity-Environmental-Philosophy-Introduction-Cambridge-ebook\/dp\/B000SHMQES<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"media-description media-description--more\">Barnosky\u2019s research counts all \u201c617\u201d Species of vertebrae that are extinct or have been lost \u201cpossibly extinct\u201d Since 1500 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.1400253\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.1400253<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"media-description media-description--more\">An academic journal reports that 95% of the bird- and mammal extinctions in 1500 have been documented. \u201cwere on islands.\u201d Thus, \u201cit is useful to consider islands as a special case\u201d Because species are diverse \u201csmaller geographic ranges\u201d They are more vulnerable to extinction than other species, due to their unique characteristics. <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/j.1472-4642.2011.00856.x\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/j.1472-4642.2011.00856.x<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"media-description media-description--more\">According to the textbook Conservation and Ecology \u201cThe estimates of the background extinction rate\u201d Fossils \u201cderive from the abundant and widespread species that dominate the fossil record. By contrast, the species most likely to become extinct today are rare and local.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Conservation-Ecology-Living-Earth-Rafferty\/dp\/1615303073\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Conservation-Ecology-Living-Earth-Rafferty\/dp\/1615303073<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"media-description media-description--more\">According to the textbook Vertebrate Evolution and Paleontology, \u201cA particularly important bias of the fossil record is expressed against organisms that are rare and\/or geographically restricted.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Vertebrate-Paleontology-Evolution-Robert-Carroll\/dp\/0716718227\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Vertebrate-Paleontology-Evolution-Robert-Carroll\/dp\/0716718227<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"media-description media-description--more\">An article published in Diversity and Distributions in 2011 revealed this. \u201conly six continental birds and three continental mammals were recorded in standard databases as going extinct since 1500 compared to 123 bird species and 58 mammal species on islands.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/j.1472-4642.2011.00856.x\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/j.1472-4642.2011.00856.x<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"media-description media-description--more\">Science published a paper in 2015 that revealed there was a problem. \u201conly 15 global extinctions of marine animal species in the past 514 years\u201d And \u201cnone in the past five decades.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.1255641\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.1255641<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"media-description media-description--more\">An Australian scientist has published a paper in Endangered Species Review stating that some scientists exaggerate the importance of endangered species research. \u201cthe risks of wildlife becoming extinct\u201d Use \u201cdeliberate and gross\u201d exaggerations. In the paper, it is also stated that scientists who have designated species as \u201cendangered\u201d Are \u201coften beneficiaries\u201d These designations result in funding flows. Thus, \u201cthe potential for self-serving assessments has long been recognized.\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.int-res.com\/articles\/esr2008\/6\/n006p161.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.int-res.com\/articles\/esr2008\/6\/n006p161.pdf<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"media-description media-description--more\">The paper was authored by scientists from Diversity and Distributions. \u201cOur results do not support statements or projections by others of grossly elevated extinction rates for continental bird and mammal fauna over the last 500 years compared with background rates.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/j.1472-4642.2011.00856.x\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/j.1472-4642.2011.00856.x<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"media-description media-description--more\">In 1977, President Jimmy Carter asked the EPA and State Department to produce a report. \u201cstudy of the probable changes\u201d To the \u201cworld\u2019s population, natural resources, and environment\u201d Up to the year 2000. This effort involved hundreds of people, some even including the president. \u201cinformal advisors\u201d to the study representing the world\u2019s leading environmental institutions. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justfacts.com\/document\/global_2000_report_president_carter_1979.pdf#page=4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/www.justfacts.com\/document\/global_2000_report_president_carter_1979.pdf#page=4<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"media-description media-description--more\">The Global 2000 Report to President of the United States was published by the dream team of scientists in 1979.
