James Comer (R-Ky.), was elected chairman of the committee on February 8. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/house-republicans-request-foreign-business-records-from-hunter-biden-james-biden-eric-schwerin_5046036.html\">Formally requested<\/a> James Biden, the younger Biden and Eric Schwerin, their ex-business associates, are to turn over all documents, communications and records relating to their business dealings.<\/p>\n<p>Responding in a letter obtained by The Epoch Times, Biden\u2019s attorney, Abbe David Lowell, argued that the committee lacked a \u201clegitimate legislative purpose\u201d in making that request, given that the president\u2019s son is a private citizen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether you think Mr. Biden acted properly or not, and whether you think his private business dealings and associations are inappropriate or not, his behavior is that of a private citizen, not a public official,\u201d Lowell wrote. \u201cThere was and is no family business in which he ever worked \u2026 That his father was a senator, vice president, or now president is not an endorsement of your choice to make every aspect of Mr. Biden\u2019s personal life your political weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The investigation was also a success. \u201cserious separation of powers concerns,\u201d Lowell didn&#8217;t offer any records or documents, but said that he would be happy to sit down with the committee staff. \u201csee whether Mr. Biden has information that may inform some legitimate legislative purpose and be helpful to the committee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But according to an Oversight Committee spokesperson, the attorney\u2019s counter-offer was not only unsatisfactory but also unsurprising.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s no surprise that Hunter Biden is trying to stonewall Congress\u2019 oversight and hide information about Joe Biden\u2019s involvement in his family\u2019s suspicious business practices,\u201d The Epoch Times was informed by the spokesperson in an email statement. \u201cThe American people demand transparency and oversight, not political coverups. The Oversight Committee will continue its oversight and use all tools at its disposal to gather information critical to our investigation and to inform legislative solutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The president has maintained that he was uninvolved in his family members\u2019 business dealings\u2014a claim Comer has candidly doubted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe [Biden] family has taken millions of dollars from adversaries, mainly in China,\u201d He said this on Jan. 30, at a National Press Club Headliners Newsmaker. \u201cI think we need to determine what the money was for and who supplied it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Epoch Times has reached out to Biden\u2019s attorney for comment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Accused President Joe Biden\u2019s son, Hunter Biden, of blocking its investigation into the Biden family\u2019s alleged influence peddling.
