The GOP-led House voted by 260-173 in favor of overturning the new law. 42 Democrats joined Republicans. The law must be rejected by the Democratic-led Senate, and signed by the President in order to be overturned. While President Biden said that he <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/politics-united-states-government-house-of-representatives-district-columbia-feb0bf10eba51093132b67c0268fcff1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Opposes the law<\/a>However, he hasn&#8217;t stated whether or not it will be vetoed.<\/p>\n<p>The D.C. Council approved <a href=\"https:\/\/lims.dccouncil.gov\/Legislation\/B24-0300\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">D.C. Bill 24.300<\/a> last year, which lowered the qualifications for voting in D.C.\u2019s municipal elections to just one month of residency in the District, discarding the previous U.S. citizenship or legal immigration status requirement. The law takes effect on January 1, 2024. <\/p>\n<p>The Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2022\/10\/17\/dc-voting-noncitizens-legislation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Estimates<\/a> The new law would allow noncitizen residents of D.C. to cast their ballots. <a href=\"https:\/\/lims.dccouncil.gov\/downloads\/LIMS\/47374\/Other\/B24-0300-REIA_Bill_24-0300_Local_Resident_Voting_Rights_Act_of_2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">21,000 illegal immigrants<\/a>. Even foreign nationals who pledge allegiance to another country \u2014 such as Russian and Chinese diplomats \u2014 who\u2019ve resided in the District for just one month would have the power to change the makeup of D.C.\u2019s city council and Board of Education, as well as vote on initiatives, referendums, recalls, and changes to the D.C. charter.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Although progressives on D.C. Council championed the measure to promote racial equality, the law would actually <em>disenfranchise<\/em> and dilute the votes of minority residents \u2014 born and raised in D.C., and many the descendants of slaves \u2014 who are U.S. citizens. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe D.C. city council is pushing a measure that is wildly out of touch with the views of most Americans and is so extreme that even the Washington Post editorial staff call it \u2018radical,\u2019\u201d Snead stated. \u201cEighty-four percent of Americans agree that only citizens should have the right to vote. But D.C. Democrats want to run our elections like our borders and disregard safeguards that protect the integrity of the vote.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>According to Independent Women\u2019s Forum Visiting Fellow and Civil Rights Attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwf.org\/2023\/02\/10\/house-votes-to-stop-d-c-bill-endangering-u-s-citizen-voting-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maya Noronha<\/a>The city would have to spend over $3 million to implement the law (changing voter registration applications, voter roll systems and ballot machine system, as well sending out a GOTV mailing to noncitizen residents).<em> Encourageing<\/em> They can vote), which D.C. doesn&#8217;t have. <\/p>\n<p>D.C. is likely to foot the bill. \u201cdemand a bailout from the rest of the taxpayers around the country,\u201d Noronha writes. But D.C.\u2019s election system already has significant problems.
