Efforts to recover the debris of the satellite are ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, reporters asked Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning if China asked the U.S. to return the balloon\u2019s debris.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe airship does not belong to the U.S.,\u201d Mao <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmprc.gov.cn\/mfa_eng\/xwfw_665399\/s2510_665401\/2511_665403\/202302\/t20230207_11021532.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Answered<\/a>. \u201cIt belongs to China.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s Foreign Ministry already criticized the U.S. for shooting down the balloon on Saturday, saying it was an overreaction and serious violation of international norms, state news agency Xinhua <a href=\"https:\/\/english.news.cn\/20230205\/fbbeecffa7ff48119880de4170d97495\/c.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>. The ministry reserved China\u2019s right to make any necessary responses.<\/p>\n<p>During its almost week-long flight above the United States, the spy balloon became a national obsession and fuelled tensions between superpowers. It flew over Montana, where there are some nuclear missile silos. The Pentagon claimed that the spy balloon was flying to intercept strategic sites.<\/p>\n<p>China claims that the balloon was a civilian research balloon for weather forecasting, and has veered off-course. Glen VanHerck <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/News\/Transcripts\/Transcript\/Article\/3289888\/gen-glen-vanherck-commander-north-american-aerospace-defense-command-and-united\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Telled<\/a> reporters Monday that the balloon \u2014 which was 200 feet tall and carried an airliner-jet-sized payload weighing likely \u201cin excess of a couple thousand pounds\u201d \u2014 created a debris field of \u201cmore than 15 football fields by 15 football fields\u201d South Carolina&#8217;s coast.<\/p>\n<p>A U.S. official said the spy balloon\u2019s surveillance payload did not survive the fall from about 58,000 feet intact, ABC News <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/navy-releases-close-photos-chinese-surveillance-balloon-recovery\/story?id=96950346\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>. According to them, a portion was found on the ocean&#8217;s floor while another was discovered at the surface.<\/p>\n<p><em>This was a breaking story.
