And that obsession can really hinder people\u2019s aspirations, hinder people\u2019s growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elba is adamant that racism remains a problem. However, he said that obsessing about skin color was too restrictive for him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/racism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Racism<\/a> is very real,\u201d The actor continued. \u201cBut, from my perspective, it\u2019s only as powerful as you allow it to be. I stopped describing myself as a black actor when I realized it put me in a box. We\u2019ve got to grow. We\u2019ve got to. Our skin is no more than that. It\u2019s just skin. Rant over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked if he considers himself to be a &#8216;professional athlete,&#8217; he replied that he did. \u201cmember of the black community,\u201d Elba stated that his British citizenship is more widely recognized in the U.S. than his race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou say a prominent one,\u201d Elba replied. \u201cBut when I go to America, I\u2019m a prominent member of the British community. \u2018Oh, U.K.\u2019s in the house!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He elaborated on his thoughts on the importance of race by saying: \u201cI might be the first to look like me to do a certain thing. And that\u2019s good to leave as part of my legacy. So that other people, black kids, but also white kids growing up in the circumstances I grew up in, are able to see there was a kid who came from Canning Town who ended up doing what I do. It can be done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elba eventually concluded that race wasn&#8217;t a factor in his success in Hollywood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did it because I thought that\u2019s a great profession, and I could do a good job at it,\u201d He spoke of acting. \u201cAs you get up the ladder, you get asked what it\u2019s like to be the first black to do this or that. Well, it\u2019s the same as it would be if I were white. It\u2019s the first time for me. I don\u2019t want to be the first black.
