He then stepped out of his car holding his hands up. That\u2019s when Harris alleges officers punched, stomped, and dragged him across the concrete until witnesses came outside in response to his shouts for help.<\/p>\n<p>Harris was treated at a hospital and held in jail until his family could post bond.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/ex-memphis-cops-charged-tyre-nichols-death-swarmed-black-army-vet-beat-days-earlier-lawsuit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Harris claims that Harris is facing a lawsuit \u201cfalse\u201d charges, including evading arrest. He was also charged for various drug- and weapon violations. Harris\u2019 cousin left a licensed and registered gun in the car without Harris knowing, The lawsuit states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Harris had great difficulty walking because his left leg was gashed from the assault,\u201d the lawsuit says.\u00a0\u201cBut for witnesses coming outside to observe after hearing Mr. Harris\u2019 loud screams, Mr. Harris would likely have suffered the same fate as Mr. Nichols.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Defendants in the lawsuit include Demetrius Haley, Tadarrius Bean, Justin Smith, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr. \u2014 who are the same five black officers charged with second-degree murder in the fatal beating of Nichols, a black 29-year-old FedEx worker. These officers were dismissed from Memphis&#8217; police force and do not yet have lawyers. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/crime\/the-same-5-officers-who-beat-tyre-nichols-attacked-a-memphis-army-vet-3-days-earlier-according-to-his-lawsuit\/ar-AA17iPZ6?li=BBnbcA1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Insider<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Shelby County District Attorney\u2019s Office <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scdag.com\/news-releases\/statement-from-shelby-county-district-attorneys-office-regarding-ongoing-investigation-in-tyre-nichols-case\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">As stated previously<\/a> It was investigating all those involved in the events that led up to, during and after Nichols&#8217; beating. The Memphis police said late last month it was establishing a permanent headquarters. <a href=\"https:\/\/wreg.com\/news\/local\/memphis-scorpion-unit-permanently-disbanded\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Disbanded the Scorpion street crime unit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Harris\u2019 mother called Spence Partners Law while Harris was in jail, and the firm\u2019s lawyers were the ones who found out the officers mentioned in the police report for Harris were the same ones charged in Nichols\u2019 death, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.localmemphis.com\/article\/news\/crime\/memphian-beaten-memphis-police-scorpion-unit-tyre-nichols-died\/522-b79f816c-4758-40e1-a2f5-38f130ed82a9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Report by ABC 24 Memphis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe filed a lawsuit because we believe we can prove that there\u2019s a policy and custom in MPD in which they violate the rights of young Black men like Monterrious,\u201d Jarrett Spence from the law firm said this.<\/p>\n<p>The City of Memphis and four John Does were also listed as defendants in Harris\u2019 lawsuit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A man identified as a black Army veteran is suing the five former Memphis, Tennessee, police officers charged with murdering Tyre Nichols.
