An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/p\/i-thought-i-was-saving-trans-kids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expos\u00e9<\/a> Reed confirmed for The Free Press all fears expressed in the recent years over the fast-tracking medical treatments for children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI left the clinic in November of last year because I could no longer participate in what was happening there,\u201d Reed. \u201cBy the time I departed, I was certain that the way the American medical system is treating these patients is the opposite of the promise we make to \u2018do no harm.\u2019 Instead, we are permanently harming the vulnerable patients in our care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed, a St. Louis native who describes her self as \u201cpolitically to the Left of Bernie Sanders,\u201d In the summer 2018, she took up a position at the Transgender Center, where she was a case manager and responsible for patient intake.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSoon after my arrival at the Transgender Center, I was struck by the lack of formal protocols for treatment,\u201d Reed. \u201cThe center\u2019s physician co-directors were essentially the sole authority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed stated that she saw a significant rise in teenage girls who wanted to become males with comorbidities like depression, anxiety and ADHD.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUntil <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/p\/the-beginning-of-the-end-of-gender\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2015<\/a> or so, a very small number of these boys comprised the population of pediatric gender dysphoria cases,\u201d Reed. \u201cThen, across the Western world, there began to be a dramatic increase in a new population: Teenage girls, many with no previous history of gender distress, suddenly declared they were transgender and demanded immediate treatment with testosterone.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Reed and her colleagues recognized that the rapid increase in patients seeking transition could be a manifestation of social contagion \u2014 especially when clusters of girls arrived from the same high school \u2014 but their concerns were allegedly dismissed by the physicians.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone who raised doubts ran the risk of being called a transphobe,\u201d Reed.<\/p>\n<p>After one to two visits, a letter from a therapist can be used to start medical transition. Reed stated that the Transgender Center made it easy by recommending gender-affirming therapists, and provided a template letter of support. It took only one visit to the endocrinologist to get a testosterone prescription. Reed discovered that infertility and the long-term effects that testosterone can have on minors is not well understood. The current treatment system was failing to protect them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur patients were told about some side effects, including sterility,\u201d Reed. \u201cBut after working at the center, I came to believe that teenagers are simply not capable of fully grasping what it means to make the decision to become infertile while still a minor.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Reed provided examples of adverse psychological and physical effects patients experienced, including liver toxicity, vaginal bleeding, and clitoral enhancement. She also warned of the danger of long-term health problems that hormonal treatments such as blood pressure, sleep apnea, or diabetes can cause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut clinics like the one where I worked are creating a whole cohort of kids with atypical genitals\u2014and most of these teens haven\u2019t even had sex yet,\u201d Reed. \u201cThey had no idea who they were going to be as adults. Yet all it took for them to permanently transform themselves was one or two short conversations with a therapist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed became aware in 2019 of a growing number of minors regretting their medical transition, known as detransitioners. Reed and her colleague tried to raise the issue and track data, but doctors resisted their attempts. The author and her co-author created the report despite this. \u201cRed Flag\u201d To track these patients, please join our mailing list\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe thought the doctors would want to collect and understand this data in order to figure out what they had missed,\u201d Reed. \u201cWe were wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reed spoke of the sad case of a teenage girl who was detransitioned from a family that had a history drug abuse and had undergone a double breastectomy to remove her breasts.
