Ron DeSantis stated this week at a press conference that Disney would pay its fair share in taxes as Republicans work to pass legislation that will allow DeSantis officially to strip Disney off its self-governance power.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDisney is going to pay its fair share of taxes, and Disney is going to honor the debt,\u201d DeSantis said. \u201cAnd that\u2019s exactly what this proposed piece of legislation will do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow, this is obviously now going to be controlled by the state of Florida, which is no longer self-governing for them,\u201d He concluded. \u201cSo there\u2019s a new sheriff in town, and that\u2019s just the way it\u2019s gonna be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;Disney is no longer going to have self-government. Disney is gonna pay their fair share of taxes and honor their debts. \u2026 This is now going to be controlled by the state of Florida. There&#8217;s a new sheriff in town.&#8221; \u2013 Governor <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RonDeSantisFL?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@RonDeSantisFL<\/a> \ud83d\udc4f\ud83d\udc4f\ud83d\udc4f <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/53o8iP5GrJ\">pic.twitter.com\/53o8iP5GrJ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 DeSantis War Room \ud83d\udc0a (@DeSantisWarRoom) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DeSantisWarRoom\/status\/1623352471413219328?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 8, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-reader-unique-id=\"2\">If passed, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/desantis-to-take-control-of-disneys-orlando-district-under-new-legislation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bill<\/a> will turn the Reedy Creek Improvement District into the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District and will deliver on DeSantis\u2019 promise last year to take over the district.<\/p>\n<p data-reader-unique-id=\"5\">DeSantis\u2019 office said that the special tax district, which has allowed Disney to govern itself since 1967, turned the theme park into \u201can unaccountable Corporate Kingdom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-reader-unique-id=\"6\">\u201cFlorida is dissolving the Corporate Kingdom and beginning a new era of accountability and transparency,\u201d DeSantis\u2019 office said. \u201cThese actions ensure a state-controlled district accountable to the people instead of a corporate-controlled kingdom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-reader-unique-id=\"7\">DeSantis\u2019 office said that the legislation:<\/p>\n<ul data-reader-unique-id=\"10\">\n<li data-reader-unique-id=\"11\">Permanently eliminates Disney\u2019s self-governing status.\n<li data-reader-unique-id=\"12\">Imposes a state-controlled, term-limited board \u2013 with members appointed by the governor \u2013 on Disney and its property.\n<li data-reader-unique-id=\"13\">Allows the state to impose taxes on Disney for possible road projects outside of the District\u2019s boundaries.\n<li data-reader-unique-id=\"14\">Ensures that Disney pays the $700+ million in unsecured debt \u2013 not Florida taxpayers.\n<li data-reader-unique-id=\"15\">Provides no control of the district to the leftist local government in Orange County, which threatened to leverage the situation to raise local taxes.\n<li data-reader-unique-id=\"16\">Imposes Florida law so that Disney is no longer given preferential treatment.\n<li data-reader-unique-id=\"17\">Prevents Disney from gaining more land by eminent domain.\n<li data-reader-unique-id=\"18\">Creates an avenue to compel Disney to contribute to local infrastructure.\n<p data-reader-unique-id=\"19\">DeSantis\u2019 office also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wptv.com\/news\/state\/disney-bill-arrives-as-florida-lawmakers-gavel-in-for-7th-special-session-in-1-5-years\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-reader-unique-id=\"20\">released<\/a> a list of some of Disney\u2019s self-governing powers:<\/p>\n<ul data-reader-unique-id=\"21\">\n<li data-reader-unique-id=\"22\">Full self-governing status with a Disney-selected board.\n<li data-reader-unique-id=\"23\">The ability to build airports and nuclear facilities.\n<li data-reader-unique-id=\"24\">Acquisition of property beyond the District\u2019s territory by condemnation and eminent domain.\n<li data-reader-unique-id=\"25\">Unilateral boundary changes.\n<li data-reader-unique-id=\"26\">No-bid procurements of construction contracts.\n<li data-reader-unique-id=\"27\">Operating standards that varied from Florida Statute.\n<li data-reader-unique-id=\"28\">Exemptions from regulatory reviews and approvals that other companies must navigate.\n<p data-reader-unique-id=\"31\">Jeff Vahle, President, Walt Disney World Resort, said in a statement that the company was closely watching the legislation.<\/p>\n<p data-reader-unique-id=\"32\">\u201cWe are monitoring the progression of the draft legislation, which is complex given the long history of the Reedy Creek Improvement District,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wdwinfo.com\/news-stories\/president-of-walt-disney-world-issues-response-to-proposed-changes-at-reedy-creek\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-reader-unique-id=\"33\">said<\/a>. \u201cDisney works under a number of different models and jurisdictions around the world, and regardless of the outcome, we remain committed to providing the highest quality experience for the millions of guests who visit each year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-reader-unique-id=\"32\"><em>Disclosure: The Daily Wire has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/videos\/introducing-dw-kids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced plans<\/a>\u00a0for kids entertainment content.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Republican Florida Gov.
