Should this bill pass into law, it would mark a hard-won victory against the left\u2019s agenda of teaching radical gender ideology in public schools and hopefully reverse a trend that has wreaked havoc on families and children across the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With Sage\u2019s Law, the state legislature seeks to redress this misguided, harmful trend by codifying what should be obvious and beyond any serious debate: Parents are the primary caregivers for their children and should be involved in their children\u2019s care. Passage of this legislation is imperative because schools are usurping parents\u2019 roles and interfering with the care of their children by intentionally concealing information about their children\u2019s desire to \u201ctransition\u201d Genders can have tragic consequences, sometimes with devastating results. In the horrific case of Sage, for whom the legislation is named, a Virginia high school\u2019s deliberate concealment of a girl\u2019s newly asserted transgender identity from her parents triggered a sequence of events that led to her becoming prey to sexual predators.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Her mother\u2019s courageous testimony before the Virginia House of Delegates Education Committee in favor of Sage\u2019s Law can be seen <a href=\"https:\/\/sg001-harmony.sliq.net\/00304\/harmony\/en\/PowerBrowser\/PowerBrowserV2\/20230130\/-1\/15874?startposition=20230130102741&#038;mediaEndTime=20230130103403&#038;viewMode=2&#038;globalStreamId=4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sage\u2019s Law would require school officials who learn that a student is self-identifying or desiring a so-called gender identity different from the student\u2019s sex (gender incongruence) to contact at least one of the student\u2019s parents. Further, the school would be required to obtain the parent\u2019s permission before implementing any plan to accommodate a child\u2019s so-called transition. This shouldn&#8217;t be controversial. Parents love their children. They should be involved in a child\u2019s potentially momentous, life-altering decision to alter his or her identity.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Parents, acting in the best interests of their child\u2019s welfare, can best ensure the appropriate professional psychological and medical support for their child just as they would for any other medical or mental health-care issue. As a matter of law and moral principle, Sage\u2019s Law is critical to protect families and children.<\/p>\n<p>For more than 300 years \u2014 starting in 1690, when John Locke addressed parental responsibilities in his \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/resources.saylor.org\/wwwresources\/archived\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Second-Treatise-of-Government.pdf\">Second Treatise of Civil Government<\/a>\u201d \u2014 the law, ethics, and our culture recognized<em> <\/em>Parents have a responsibility \u201cnourish and educate\u201d Their children.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Locke wrote: \u201cGod hath made it their business to employ this care on their offspring, and hath placed in them suitable inclinations of tenderness and concern \u2026 to apply it \u2026 to the children\u2019s good.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Indeed, <a href=\"https:\/\/law.lis.virginia.gov\/vacode\/title1\/chapter2.1\/section1-240.1\/\">Virginia law<\/a> It is stated explicitly that a parent has the \u201cfundamental right\u201d These decisions are made in relation to the \u201cupbringing, education, and care of the parent\u2019s child.\u201d Similar decisions were made by the U.S. Supreme Court. <a href=\"https:\/\/supreme.justia.com\/cases\/federal\/us\/268\/510\/#tab-opinion-1930961\"><em>Pierce v. Society of Sisters<\/em><\/a> That \u201cthe child is <em>not<\/em> a mere creature of the state\u201d And in <a href=\"https:\/\/supreme.justia.com\/cases\/federal\/us\/321\/158\/#170\"><em>Massachusetts v. Prince<\/em><\/a> You can find the \u201ccare and nurture of the child resides <em>first<\/em> in the parents.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The court stressed in 2000 that <a href=\"https:\/\/supreme.justia.com\/cases\/federal\/us\/530\/57\/#tab-opinion-1960799\"><em>Troxel v.
