A court filing in the case (<a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.cand.327471\/gov.uscourts.cand.327471.1100.6.pdf\">PDF<\/a>() Facebook indicated that it had over 244,000 developers located in the countries it considered to be its home. \u201chigh-risk\u201d Nations, including China, where there are 86 961 and Russia, where there are 42 078.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook\u2019s internal materials described \u201chigh-risk\u201d Nations were those that \u201cmay be governed by potentially risky data storage and disclosure rules or be more likely to house malicious actors,\u201d Includes \u201cstates known to collect data for intelligence targeting and cyber espionage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Facebook has revealed that it works with developers in other countries \u201chigh-risk\u201d Countries that include Vietnam, Ukraine, Cuba and Iran.<\/p>\n<p>Warner and Rubio claimed they were \u201cstartled to learn\u201d So many Chinese developers had access Facebook data \u201cgiven that Facebook has never been permitted to operate in the PRC.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The senators requested Meta to explain its security review process regarding sharing data in China and Russia with developers. Also, to record the information that these Chinese and Russian developers were able to access as well as the times they had access. Meta was also asked by the senators to estimate the number of U.S. Facebook users who had their data shared with developers in the identified countries. \u201chigh-risk\u201d nations.<\/p>\n<p>The senators also asked if Meta has any indication that any developers\u2019 access enabled coordinated inauthentic activity, targeting activity, malicious advertising, fraudulent activity, or any other malign behavior by foreign governments.<\/p>\n<p>NTD News reached Meta to get their opinion on the issue. They did not respond when this article was published.<\/p>\n<p>Meta was the subject of a reply letter that Bloomberg shared with Meta <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-02-07\/senators-press-zuckerberg-over-risks-from-developers-in-china#xj4y7vzkg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a> the documents detailing Facebook\u2019s data-sharing with developers in \u201chigh-risk\u201d Nation \u201care an artifact from a different product at a different time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany years ago, we made substantive changes to our platform, shutting down developers\u2019 access to key types of data on Facebook while reviewing and approving all apps that request access to sensitive information,\u201d Meta\u2019s response letter read.<\/p>\n<h2>Privacy laws for Facebook<\/h2>\n<p>For the past four year, Facebook has been the target of privacy lawsuits. This lawsuit claimed that Facebook inappropriately shared user information with third parties such as Cambridge Analytica.<\/p>\n<p>Cambridge Analytica, a British political consulting company, was under investigation after it was accused of improperly using data from 87 million Facebook users in order to support the 2016 election. \u201cBrexit\u201d vote for the UK to leave the European Union and Donald Trump\u2019s 2016 election campaign. After the allegations, the political consulting company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntd.com\/cambridge-analytica-and-british-parent-files-for-bankruptcy_182330.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">For bankruptcy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While Cambridge Analytica was shut down, the lawsuit against Facebook continues. In addition to their complaints about Cambridge Analytica, the plaintiffs allege Facebook\u2019s practices had compromised their data privacy and that data \u201cmay be available on the dark web or in the hands of foreign nationals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meta will be open for business in August <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntd.com\/facebook-agrees-to-settle-cambridge-analytica-data-privacy-suit_831832.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In principle, the parties reached an agreement to settle the lawsuit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In December, both parties had <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.npr.org\/documents\/document.html?id=23529033-facebook-inc-consumer-privacy-user-profile-litig\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reached<\/a> A settlement amount of approximately $725 million was reached. Meta maintained in that settlement agreement that it had not done anything wrong and that its users had agreed to the practices.
