Republican lawmakers asked Vijaya Gadde (ex-Deputy General Counsel James Baker) and Yoel Roth (ex-Global Head of Trust and Safety) about their decision to censor Hunter Biden&#8217;s laptop story that was published by The New York Post just before the 2020 election.<\/p>\n<p>James Comer, Republican of Kentucky, Chair of the Oversight Committee, cited data from a survey showing that most Americans who voted for Joe Biden did not know about the report. He said that they would have voted for another candidate if they were informed. He also lauded Musk, who acquired Twitter at the end of last year and presently serves as the company\u2019s chief executive, for vowing to prioritize freedom of expression on the platform.<\/p>\n<p>Jamie Raskin, a ranking member of the Oversight Committee (D-MD), argued that the revelations about collusion between Twitter &#038; various intelligence agencies documented by the Twitter Files were false. \u201cauthentically trivial\u201d  \u201csilly.\u201d He claimed that the hearing was \u201call based on the obsessive victimology of right-wing politics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Twitter documents revealed that Baker had previously been the general counsel of the FBI. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/new-twitter-files-show-fbi-paid-twitter-millions-influenced-execs-to-censor-hunter-biden-laptop-story\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">insistent<\/a> to Roth that the materials from Hunter Biden\u2019s unearthed laptop were either faked or hacked, even though The New York Post had included a receipt from the repair shop signed by the commander-in-chief\u2019s son. Baker said that he was innocent and did not commit any wrongdoing in his time with the company.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was not aware of and certainly did not engage in any conspiracy or other effort to do anything unethical, improper, or unlawful while I was at Twitter. Period,\u201d In his opening address, he shared these words with lawmakers <a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/2023.02.08-Jim-Baker-Testimony.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Statement<\/a>. \u201cI did not act unlawfully or otherwise inappropriately in any manner with respect to Hunter Biden\u2019s laptop computer. Indeed, documents that Twitter has disclosed publicly reflect that I urged caution with respect to the matter and noted that we needed more information to fully assess what was going on and to decide what to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gadde, who had advocated for the removal from the platform of former President Donald Trump and repeatedly denied that Twitter undertly limited the reach to some conservative accounts, supported the monitoring of the \u201chealth of the public conversation\u201d During her opening <a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Opening-Statement-of-Vijaya-Gadde.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Statement<\/a> However, he acknowledged that the Hunter Biden laptop story wasn&#8217;t handled properly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn hindsight, Twitter should have reinstated The New York Post\u2019s account immediately given the circumstances,\u201d She agreed. \u201cThere is no easy way to run a global communications platform that satisfies business and revenue goals, individual customer expectations, local laws, and cultural norms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Roth, unlike other executives, had spurned attempts by government agencies to acquire data from Twitter by noting the company\u2019s policies against enabling surveillance activity. According to the Twitter Files, Roth, national security reporters and social media executives, were implicated in surveillance activity. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/new-twitter-files-show-fbi-paid-twitter-millions-influenced-execs-to-censor-hunter-biden-laptop-story\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nudged<\/a> intelligence agents to censor stories related to foreign influence on the Biden family. Roth, however <a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Roth-House-Oversight-opening-statement-V4-Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Testimony<\/a> It was not politically motivated for social media companies to cooperate with law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the recent reporting known as the Twitter Files, there was an attempt to portray interactions between Twitter and other social media platforms and the FBI as politically driven interference. My experience of these interactions was different,\u201d He stated. \u201cAcross the FBI, DHS, and other agencies, the professionals responsible for combating malign foreign interference in elections did so with integrity, and the utmost care and respect for the laws of this country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said that Twitter is his favorite platform. \u201cmade a mistake\u201d With respect to Hunter Biden&#8217;s laptop story, they tried to enforce rules against hacked material.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll be the first to admit that we didn\u2019t always get it right,\u201d He went on. \u201cIndividual content moderation decisions will always be contentious, and reasonable minds can differ about whether a specific choice was right or wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former Twitter executives who were ousted by Elon Musk upon his purchase of the company accounted for their decisions to censor the bombshell Hunter Biden laptop story before members of the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday morning.
