Ocasio-Cortez wanted to know if members of a militia group were involved in the Border Patrol. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/tag\/splc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SPLC Brands \u201chate group\u201d<\/a> Had \u201cregular contact\u201d Agents in his sector<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you aware of the militia group known as Veterans on Patrol?\u201d She asked. Modlin replied, \u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd are you aware that this organization is a designated hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center?\u201d She asked. He answered again. \u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ocasio Cortez asked Modlin if he knew. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/tag\/border-patrol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Agents of Border Patrol<\/a> \u201chave had regular contact and, according to this report, seem to have received assistance from this organization?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Modlin pointed out that \u201cassistance\u201d A variety of meanings can be used.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf someone calls and says there\u2019s illegal activity on the border, then we do respond, and obviously some of these calls will come from militia groups,\u201d He said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI ask because Veterans on Patrol, again, a designated hate group, does publish quite a bit of their own media,\u201d Ocasio Cortez continued to note one video in which she stated these words \u201can agent greets militia members with a high-five.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an organization that spreads antisemitic conspiracies and beyond, and I was wondering if your sector has a policy regarding agents interfacing with known members of designated hate organizations?\u201d Ocasio-Cortez pressed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know that it\u2019s possible to separate all interaction with any group that\u2019s down at the border,\u201d Modlin responded. \u201cCertainly we do not encourage militia groups, or anyone else, to be in the border environment, but we do respond, again, if someone calls and says there\u2019s someone in distress that needs us or if they\u2019ve witnessed some illegal action on the border.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The New York Democrat then asked point blank if Border Patrol agents would lose their jobs for working with \u201chate groups.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you were to discover agents actively working with hate groups and militias, would their employment be terminated?\u201d Ocasio-Cortez asked.<\/p>\n<p>Modlin observed that Border Patrol agents were not a problem. \u201care all part of a bargaining unit,\u201d They are offered \u201cthe right to representation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know that I could say what would and wouldn\u2019t trigger an automatic termination, but there would certainly be a disciplinary process,\u201d Modlin concluded.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">SHOCKING: Alexandria Ocasio Cortez suggests that Border Patrol should fire any agent working with an organization the SPLC labels a terrorist organization &#8220;hate group.&#8221; The SPLC has three brands: Alliance Defending Freedom (Family Research Council), and The Center for Security Policy (Center for Security Policy). &#8220;hate groups,&#8221; Among others. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/y15VtpmSAy\">pic.twitter.com\/y15VtpmSAy<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Tyler O&#8217;Neil (@Tyler2ONeil) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Tyler2ONeil\/status\/1623129030428876800?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 8, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The Southern Poverty Law Center, a left-leaning activist organization and pro-bono litigation group, is well-known for its notoriously poor performance. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2022\/10\/24\/new-california-laws-will-create-ideological-purity-test-police-banning-ties-hate-bias-critics-say\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hate group<\/a>\u201d Anger directed at mainstream Christian and conservative organizations<\/p>\n<p>As I describe in my book \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Making-Hate-Pay-Corruption-Southern\/dp\/1642934399\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Making Hate Pay: The Corruption of the Southern Poverty Law Center<\/a>,\u201d The SPLC seized the program it used for bankrupting Ku Klux Klan-affiliated organizations and weaponized it against conservatives groups. Partly to scare donors and part to silence ideological opponents,<\/p>\n<p>After the SPLC fired its co-founder amid a racial discrimination and sexual harassment scandal in 2019, a former staffer claimed that the SPLC\u2019s accusations of \u201chate\u201d These are some of the benefits. \u201ccynical fundraising scam\u201d This is the goal \u201cbilking northern liberals.\u201d Critics across the political spectrum have voiced opposition and alarm at the organization\u2019s \u201chate group\u201d smears.<\/p>\n<p>In 2012, a terrorist targeted the Family Research Council\u2019s headquarters in the nation\u2019s capital, entering the lobby with a semiautomatic pistol and then shooting and wounding a guard. The man told the FBI that he found the conservative organization on the SPLC\u2019s \u201chate map\u201d It was intended to kill all the people in the building. <\/p>\n<p>He pleaded guilty later to terror acts and was given a sentence.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-dc\/pr\/virginia-man-sentenced-25-years-prison-shooting-security-guard-family-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">25-year sentence in prison<\/a>. The SPLC condemned this attack but kept the Family Research Council in its place. \u201chate map\u201d Since then.<\/p>\n<p>The SPLC doesn&#8217;t consider Veterans on Patrol to be a terrorist organization. \u201chate group,\u201d But rather an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.splcenter.org\/fighting-hate\/extremist-files\/group\/veterans-patrol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">antigovernment militia<\/a>.\u201d SPLC claims the militia \u201cadvances initiatives that are founded on common antigovernment and anti-immigrant ideas,\u201d And has \u201canti-Indigenous, antisemitic, anti-Catholic and anti-Mormon falsehoods.\u201d The SPLC quotes the militia\u2019s mission page as stating that \u201cThe Jews have used their political puppets to alter the constitution and create new laws that allow mass-immigration, same-sex marriage, unregulated market, bribing of politicians, funding of Israel, and many more destructive policies.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>It is not clear how much power this militia holds. The official website of the militia does not show up in a Google search. A review of the site did not reveal it. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/profile.php?id=100068379152866&#038;sk=reviews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cVeterans on Patrol\u201d Facebook page<\/a> It claims the page is fake. <\/p>\n<p>Ocasio-Cortez did not immediately respond to The Daily Signal\u2019s request for comment about her suggestion that Border Patrol should fire agents who work with organizations that the SPLC brands \u201chate groups.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>U.S. Customs and Border Protection was the parent agency of Border Patrol.
