Carman allegedly murdered his grandfather to collect $550,000 from a family trust fund. This money he reportedly spent in three years.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors allege that Carman, who was short of money, took Linda, his mother, on his boat in 2016 to collect $85,000 in insurance money.<\/p>\n<p>Carman\u2019s trial is set for October 2 and is expected to last for more than two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>The Carman indictment was unveiled in May 2022. It accused Carman of murdering his mother in September 2016, while on a boating trip, and then lying to the authorities. Although the indictment doesn&#8217;t explain Carman&#8217;s alleged murder of his mother, it does state that he intentionally sank the boat they were on that day. Carman spent eighteen days on a liferaft after his boat sank, before being found by a commercial fisherman.<\/p>\n<p>Carman was rescued from the sinking boat in 2016.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/nathan-carman-man-rescued-sea-suspicions-compound-grief-mom\/\">Telled<\/a> The Associated Press reported that he attempted to find his mother after the ship began sinking. According to him, he heard that there was a \u201cfunny noise\u201d Water began to pour in from the engine compartment. The boat was submerged in minutes. At the time, he claimed that he had seen his mother in the boat&#8217;s cockpit and ran to grab food, flares and life jackets. But she was gone by the time he looked back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened on the boat was a terrible tragedy that I am still trying to process and that I am still trying to come to terms with,\u201d He spoke to the AP at that time.<\/p>\n<p>Suspicions were raised even at the time of the incident, including the death of Carman\u2019s grandfather three years earlier. He told the AP in the same interview that he had nothing to do with his grandfather\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy grandfather was like a father to me, and I was like a son to him,\u201d Carman spoke at the time. \u201cHe was the closest person in the world to me, and I loved him and he loved me, and I had absolutely nothing to do with his death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A search warrant had been issued in 2014 relating to the death of Carman\u2019s grandfather, Chakalos. The warrant.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/nathan-carman-charged-killing-mother-linda-2016\/\">Obtained<\/a>\u00a0According to the AP, Carman, who was the last person to visit his grandfather, purchased a rifle similar to the one used in shooting and discarded his GPS and hard drive around the time that his grandfather died.<\/p>\n<p>Chakalos divvied up his $42 million estate between his four adult daughters, one of whom was Carman\u2019s mother. Carman\u2019s three aunts filed a lawsuit in 2018 in which they accused him of killing his grandfather and possibly his mother in order to gain the money. They requested a judge to stop Carman&#8217;s inheritance.<\/p>\n<p>Carman is facing eight criminal charges including the murder of his mother and seven related to his alleged attempts at obtaining his inheritance. He faces life imprisonment if he is convicted.
