Even more surprising, Gerth\u2019s report, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cjr.org\/special_report\/trumped-up-press-versus-president-part-1.php\">The press versus the president<\/a>,\u201d appeared at the in-house organ of America\u2019s most prestigious journalism school, Columbia Journalism Review, which has long been regarded as something of an unofficial ombudsman for the media industry.<\/p>\n<p>If CJR is finally comfortable admitting that the media\u2019s Russiagate reporting was so scandalously bad that it damns the entire industry, that seems like a remarkable admission.<\/p>\n<p>On Twitter, Glenn Greenwald, a left-leaning reporter who made some significant career sacrifices for calling out the media\u2019s bogus reporting on this topic, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ggreenwald\/status\/1620433389932417024\">declared Gerth\u2019s reporting<\/a> \u201cabsolutely devastating on how casually, frequently, recklessly and eagerly the press lied on Russiagate.\u201d Gerth lays out what happened so clearly that it\u2019s hard to imagine fair-minded readers who make it through all 24,000 words of Gerth\u2019s report would conclude any differently. Personally, I\u2019m proud to say that the work of RealClearInvestigations \u2013 and my colleagues there, Tom Kuntz, Aaron Mate, and Paul Sperry \u2013 are all cited favorably by Gerth as one of the few media outlets that consistently got the story right.<\/p>\n<p>But, I was a journalist who spent a lot of time during Trump&#8217;s years doing substantive reporting to debunk the Russia collusion narrative. <em>anger<\/em>. It\u2019s an emotion not directed at Gerth, who has done courageous work. This piece appears two years after Trump&#8217;s departure and almost five years after Robert Mueller, the special prosecutor, failed to prove years of anonymously sourced speculation regarding Russia collusion. That is an indictment enough.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To start, Gerth demonstrates the media still won\u2019t grapple with the truth. Gerth&#8217;s piece is peppered by major journalists refusing to comment on basic mistakes or questionable or unethical judgements. Gerth did manage to get Bob Woodward, the dashboard saint of journalism, on the record condemning the media\u2019s failures here. While that\u2019s a notable concession, if respected figures such as Woodward harbored doubts about the media\u2019s conduct, they should have been a lot more vocal \u2013 and much earlier.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also understandable why Gerth would want to keep his report narrowly focused on the facts of what transpired. But without any substantive discussion of the media\u2019s motives it\u2019s hard to draw any important lessons from this sorry saga. Gerth does point out that Russiagate has led to an erosion of trust in the media and offers a pallid warning that the media\u2019s \u201cfailure will almost certainly shape the coverage of what lies ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is not enough. Devoid of any broader context about the long history manipulations of America\u2019s national security state or the corporate media\u2019s evolution into ham-fisted left-wing ideologues, one can read Gerth\u2019s dry reporting as a comedy of errors: A bunch of well-intentioned reporters, faced with the challenge of covering a problematic president \u2013 and disingenuous Democrats and partisan law enforcement officials \u2013 kept bungling the reporting, by getting key facts wrong \u00a0and committing serious sins of omission.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/thepoliticalinsider.com\/former-fbi-agent-involved-in-trump-russia-probe-indicted-for-working-for-russia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Former FBI Agent Involved in Trump\/Russia Probe Indicted for\u2026 Working for Russia<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"subscribe\" class=\"email-signup inarticle\">\n<h4>Support Conservative Voices!<\/h4>\n<h5><strong>Get the most recent news by signing up<\/strong> Get political news, insights, and commentary directly to your inbox<\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<p>The missing motive points to something much more sinister. The media\u2019s Russiagate coverage hinged on being extremely trusting of officials in national security and law enforcement agencies that have historically undermined the press and been hostile to civil rights. There\u2019s a saying in traditional journalism \u2013 \u201cIf your mother says she loves you, check it out.\u201d However, what about when? \u201cdeep state\u201d Actors with a strong animus for Donald Trump promoted the story that a sitting president of the United States was compromised by a foreign force. This explosive story required thorough vetting. The mainstream media decided instead to become stenographers.<\/p>\n<p>It might seem that it is more difficult to discern the truth than it really was due to the avalanche of information required for the Russia collusion story. It quickly evolved into an IQ test after you accepted that Trump was compromised.<\/p>\n<p>Starting before Trump was even inaugurated in January 2017, it was reported that the Logan Act was being used as a predicate to investigate Trump\u2019s incoming national security adviser, Michael Flynn. The Logan Act is to national security laws what phrenology is to medical science \u2013 it\u2019s a never-enforced 1799 statute that says it\u2019s illegal for private citizens to negotiate with foreign governments. Laughed at by constitutional scholars, it\u2019s routinely violated and invariably ignored.<\/p>\n<p>Other than that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/weekly-standard\/how-the-logan-act-discredits-the-leaks-against-michael-flynn\">Many major media outlets reported credible news reports<\/a> on Flynn\u2019s alleged Logan Act violations as if they were a potentially serious transgressions, when it should have been obvious that invoking this ancient and discredited statute was a desperate attempt to justify a politically motivated investigation. Flynn&#8217;s case is only one of many instances where the media ignores obvious facts.<\/p>\n<p>Gerth is to be commended for his excellent job unraveling the story about Flynn being railroaded by Justice Department as well as the ridiculous credulity in the press concerning the so-called \u201cdossier\u201d A clearly untrustworthy document about Trump was created by partisan political foes of the president. Nonetheless, most of Gerth\u2019s examples of questionable interactions between the press and government sources require reading between the lines to assess just how willfully blind the press was to the possibility of law enforcement officials abusing their power.<\/p>\n<p>And given that the key players of the story were Democratic partisans, current and former spies, and shady opposition researchers, it\u2019s also worth asking to what extent the press was being overtly manipulated and deliberately fed bad information. Once again, much of this discussion is outside Gerth\u2019s narrower focus on how the sausage was being made in newsrooms. But he does get close to identifying the root cause of the problem when Gerth mentions a fateful coincidence. The FBI\u2019s dubious White House briefing to Trump and Obama on the dossier\u2019s absurd allegations involving Trump and Moscow prostitutes \u2013 a made-up event that was promptly leaked to CNN, catalyzing the Russiagate hysteria \u2013 occurred on Jan. 6, 2017, four years to the day before the infamous riot at the U.S. Capitol.<\/p>\n<p>These two events aren\u2019t unrelated. Obsessively gaslighting tens of millions of Trump voters with a transparently false narrative that the president was a traitor who pundits openly agitated to remove from office didn\u2019t just badly erode trust in the media. It also made it impossible for the media to summon the institutional trust necessary to persuade Trump supporters \u2013 and Trump himself \u2013 that Joe Biden\u2019s narrow 2020 election victory was legitimate. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The result is that the shoddy reporting during Trump\u2019s presidency contributed heavily to the frenzied and distrustful atmosphere that undermined Americans\u2019 faith in elections, shook the very foundations of the Republic, and has left us all worried about political stability in the future.<\/p>\n<p>So while Gerth\u2019s careful reporting is noted and appreciated, it is unlikely to produce the kind of self-examination and reckoning necessary to restore trust in the media and the vital role they play in the democratic process. The media has learned many wrong lessons by allowing it to go unreported. My fear is that when asked about the media\u2019s colossal failures in the Trump years, Gerth\u2019s article will be used an excuse instead of an indictment.
