Scary, right?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even the most decent of citizens can be scared by a situation that makes them look unflattering. People with skeletons hidden in their closets are even more to fear.<\/p>\n<p>Take a look at the self-directed documentary.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the same process, on paper, but you or someone you love gets to call the shots. Voila! Voila!<\/p>\n<p>Netflix\u2019s \u201cPamela, A Love Story\u201d The streaming channel launched the film this week. The film follows the actress\u2019s colorful career, from starring in the smash hit \u201cBaywatch\u201d To her tabloid-friendly, love life. The spin couldn\u2019t be more obvious.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanna take control of the narrative, for the first time,\u201d she says in the film\u2019s trailer.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing wrong with that, on paper, but let\u2019s not kid ourselves. There\u2019s a reason Anderson agreed to star in the project. Her son Brandon Thomas Lee is also a producer.<\/p>\n<p>Reviews, so far, are laudatory while some critics can\u2019t help but share their skepticism, <a href=\"https:\/\/rogersmovienation.com\/2023\/02\/02\/netflixable-documentary-pamela-gives-anderson-a-chance-at-her-side-of-a-love-story\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">like Roger Moore.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Unguarded? No. Deep? Not really, but a bit self-aware. Unfiltered, warts and everything? Only hers, children.<\/p>\n<p>Anderson isn\u2019t alone here.<\/p>\n<p>Michelle Obama is the main attraction \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/becoming-michelle-obama-higher-grounds\/\">Becoming<\/a>,\u201d A 2020 documentary about her book tour, cultural impact and future plans.<\/p>\n<p>While most reviews were favorable, some critics raised concerns about the project&#8217;s tone.\u00a0The Detroit News described it as, \u201cas polished and smoothed out as a campaign ad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s no surprise.<\/p>\n<p>Behind the production company \u201cBecoming\u201d Higher Ground. if that name rings a bell, it\u2019s because it\u2019s the cinematic shingle <a href=\"https:\/\/highergroundmedia.com\/filmtv-archive\/becoming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Founded by the Obamas<\/a> After their White House exit.<\/p>\n<p>Was anyone thinking? \u201cBecoming\u201d would show anything but the former First Lady\u2019s very best side?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/conservatives-obama-netflix-deal\/\"><strong>RELATED: WHY CONSERVATIVES SHOULDN\u2019T FEAR OBAMAS NETFLIX DEAL<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Val Kilmer is one of a few actors who are well-known for their difficulties behind the scenes. The 2014 documentary \u201cLost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley\u2019s Island of Dr. Moreau\u201d did the actor\u2019s reputation few favors.<\/p>\n<p>The documentary &#8220;2021&#8221; \u201cVal\u201d The star was rebranded as both a cancer survivor and a dedicated person. They are both true. However, seeing him share his creative process has changed the narrative about his career.<\/p>\n<p>Kilmer and two of his grown children Jack, Mercedes, produced the documentary.<\/p>\n<p>The Netflix documentary is not to be missed \u201cHalftime,\u201d An interesting producer credit has been attached for a glimpse into Jennifer Lopez&#8217;s career and life. Yes, that\u2019s Lopez\u2019s manager, Benny Medina,\u00a0listed on the film\u2019s IMDB page.<\/p>\n<p>HBO&#8217;s late-2013 episode featured the most bizarre example of this sub-genre. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/pelosi-in-the-house-media-bias-alexandra-pelosi\/\">Pelosi in the House<\/a>\u201d This is the story of Nancy Pelosi, the former Speaker of Congress. Few would argue she\u2019s not a consequential figure in American politics, but the choice of film directors proved wildly inappropriate.<\/p>\n<p>Pelosi\u2019s daughter, Alexandra Pelosi, is calling the shots behind the camera.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not to say these productions don\u2019t reveal fascinating nuggets. Stars have a tendency to want to share everything about themselves. This can be both factual or illuminating.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes the star\u2019s input can yield a truly warts-and-all story. \u201cRocket Man,\u201d made with Elton John\u2019s blessing, included some of the tawdrier aspects of his colorful life. John and David Furnish co-produced the movie, but John insisted that the film not glorify his past.<\/p>\n<p>The film, although it was successful, did not present itself as grounded in the truth. The film\u2019s fantasy sequences alone scream that truth.<\/p>\n<p>Documentaries on paper are one thing. We\u2019re meant to believe their narratives, accept their truths as gospel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hardly earth-shattering that \u201cPamela, A Love Story\u201d puts a positive spin on an actor\u2019s life and career. It\u2019s more complicated when\u00a0folks like Pelosi and Obama, figures who intersect with the nation\u2019s political present (and future), get the hagiography treatment.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, viewers need to know the reason these projects exist and why they are accessible to the public.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Imagine if a documentary crew followed your every move.
