And it cost lives,\u201d Kevin Bass, MD\/PhD student at the University of Maryland, wrote this in a recent article. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/its-time-scientific-community-admit-we-were-wrong-about-coivd-it-cost-lives-opinion-1776630\">op-ed<\/a> Newsweek.<\/p>\n<p>Whoops.<\/p>\n<p>For many years, scientists argued with nearly one voice that broad vaccine mandates were necessary and that prolonged lockdowns were needed, while Americans suffered.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors who specialize in medical professionals <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-55141055\">questioned<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsws.org\/en\/articles\/2021\/06\/05\/scho-j05.html\">the narrative<\/a>\u00a0or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2020\/03\/17\/a-fiasco-in-the-making-as-the-coronavirus-pandemic-takes-hold-we-are-making-decisions-without-reliable-data\/\">offered<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bariweiss\/status\/1601011428579717121\">opinions<\/a>\u00a0not accepted by the mainstream were mocked and censored on social media platforms.<\/p>\n<p>Americans were required to abide by COVID restrictions even when they seemed to defy common sense, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmhsc.org\/blog\/mask-etiquette-when-dining-out\">such as<\/a> wearing a face mask when standing in a restaurant but not when sitting down.<\/p>\n<p>Bass said he \u201cstaunchly supported\u201d public health authorities when they called for lockdowns, vaccines, and booster shots. He believed at the time that they were responding with \u201ccompassion, diligence, and scientific expertise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now the scales have fallen from his eyes, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Public health authorities \u201coverstated the evidence and misled the public\u201d on a litany of issues, including natural COVID immunity vs. vaccine immunity, school closures and disease transmission, aerosol spread, mask mandates, and vaccine effectiveness and safety, especially for young people, Bass wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. government, namely the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), as well as the World Health Organization (WHO), are all at fault, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Bass also pointed out that pandemic policies like lockdowns were promoted by elites in academia, government, medicine, journalism, tech, and public health and forced on the working class, \u201cwhose daily lives routinely demand that they reckon with risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not only were the experts wrong, but their mistakes cost lives, Bass concluded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf our public health officials had led with less hubris, the course of the pandemic in the United States might have had a very different outcome, with far fewer lost lives,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the loss of life potentially caused by the half-baked policies foisted on the public, Americans suffered physically, emotionally, and financially.<\/p>\n<p>Elderly Americans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbur.org\/cognoscenti\/2022\/03\/07\/covid-patients-icu-dying-alone-helen-t-dcouto\">died alone<\/a> in the hospital. Their families were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-rites-insight\/there-are-no-funerals-death-in-quarantine-leaves-nowhere-to-grieve-idUSKBN2161ZM\">denied<\/a> a funeral.\u00a0Children <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/01\/24\/us\/politics\/student-suicides-nevada-coronavirus.html\">committed<\/a> suicide. Many of the ones who didn\u2019t suffered, cooped up at home and stuck behind a computer screen, watching their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/11\/28\/briefing\/pandemic-learning-loss.html\">grades sink<\/a> while schools stayed closed longer than restaurants.\u00a0Families <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/10\/14\/us\/phoenix-arizona-aguirre-family-covid-deaths\/index.html\">lost<\/a> their businesses. <a href=\"https:\/\/cew.georgetown.edu\/cew-reports\/jobtracker\/#tool-3-tracking\">Millions<\/a> lost their jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Then many Americans were forced to get the COVID vaccine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/251914\/health-care-workers-denied-religious-exemption-to-covid-19-vaccine-mandate-settlement\">despite<\/a> religious and health objections. Stories of \u201cvaccine injuries\u201d including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/374\/bmj.n1786\/rr-0\">nerve damage<\/a> proliferated online. Some young people, who are least at risk of developing serious COVID symptoms, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/safety\/adverse-events.html\">developed<\/a>\u00a0myocarditis or inflammation of the heart after the vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>Bass describes himself as a \u201ccentrist\u201d with \u201cnon-partisan takes on health, longevity, nutrition\u201d who welcomes \u201cconstructive criticism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He is not the first\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/scientists-need-to-admit-what-they-got-wrong-about-covid\/\">to admit<\/a>\u00a0that medical experts\u00a0oversold their confidence in how COVID works and what the response should be.\u00a0Even CNN\u2019s Dr. Leana Wen <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrLeanaWen\/status\/1473045198980665344?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1473045198980665344%7Ctwgr%5Edb858c6fabbade8faa619e3a7a9b9eff05053fb7%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fd-13444116233539229772.ampproject.net%2F2301181928000%2Fframe.html\">said<\/a>\u00a0at the end of 2021 that\u00a0\u201ccloth masks are little more than facial decorations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, so far it has been crickets from most of the scientific community on whether they got anything wrong over the last three years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Could the experts be starting to admit, three years later, that they were wrong about COVID?
