Newman stated that the defense was ready to defend. \u201copened the door\u201d to allow that evidence in when they questioned Murdaugh\u2019s friends about his character, Buzzfeed News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/article\/davidmack\/alex-murdaugh-financial-crimes-admissible-judge\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe witness was asked whether he could think of any reason \u2026 why Mr. Murdaugh would commit the crimes he\u2019s accused of committing,\u201d According to Newman, \u201cThat, in effect, turned the cross-examination of that witness from dealing with specific issues in the case to having that witness testify as a character witness for Mr. Murdaugh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Newman suggested that questions regarding whether Murdaugh was a good father\/provider were not appropriate. \u201copened the door for the state to respond by asking questions as the state did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now jurors will hear about Murdaugh\u2019s other alleged crimes, including financial crimes and charges related to his alleged attempt to stage a fake \u201chit\u201d On himself. However, he hadn&#8217;t been indicted until July 2022 for their deaths.<\/p>\n<p>The murder case was the final in a series of bizarre stories about the once-prominent South Carolina lawyer. After Murdaugh\u2019s wife and son were murdered, police began looking into Murdaugh\u2019s life and discovered numerous disturbing details.<\/p>\n<p>Murdaugh was accused in stealing $8.5million from people who had employed him as an attorney. Murdaugh is also accused of orchestrating his own murder, hiring a friend as his attorney to kill him in order to give his surviving son, Buster a $10m life insurance payout. Murdaugh is alleged to have lied to police, saying that a stranger had shot him in the side of a road. This all took place just days after Murdaugh\u2019s firm discovered he had stolen money from clients.<\/p>\n<p>State police also began investigating the hit-and run death of a 19 year-old girl in July 2015 to see if it was connected to Murdaugh. However, no further details have been provided. Authorities also exhumed the body of Murdaugh\u2019s former housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield, who was said to have died after a fall in 2018. Murdaugh allegedly collected more than $4 million from his home insurer by claiming wrongful death and saying he was working for Satterfield\u2019s family, but the family didn\u2019t receive any of the money, according to prosecutors.<\/p>\n<p>Murdaugh was also charged with money laundering and creating an ad. \u201cdistribution network\u201d The Associated Press is the best source for painkillers\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/crime-south-carolina-money-laundering-indictments-7cb0c6e33cd9ad421dafd5e82df52795\">reported<\/a>\u00a0The time was at the moment. Murdaugh is alleged to have run the drug ring alongside the same friend that he hired to murder him.<\/p>\n<p>Murdaugh denied murdering his wife and son. He said he was only visiting his parents at that time. He\u2019s been in jail since October 2021 with a $7 million bond. The South Carolina Supreme Court expelled him last summer.
