He challenged aspects of an article published last week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/01\/26\/us\/politics\/durham-trump-russia-barr.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">detailing alleged<\/a> problems in Durham\u2019s endeavor. \u201cThey ignored some fundamental facts as to why some of the information that Durham was seeking was very important information,\u201d According to the, Barr was charged <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/politics\/story\/2023-02-01\/bill-barr-says-he-didnt-overstep-in-his-involvement-in-the-durham-probe-of-mueller-investigation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Los Angeles Times<\/a>. He added that the article was not complete. \u201cobvious reasons\u201d for Durham\u2019s investigation.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times \u201cstands behind this story and the reporting it contains,\u201d A spokesperson for the newspaper responded. Barr declined to comment on the article in the original report.<\/p>\n<p>In May 2019, shortly after special counsel Robert Mueller released his report, Barr appointed then-U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut Durham to investigate the origins and conduct of the FBI inquiry into alleged ties between former President Donald Trump\u2019s 2016 campaign and Russia. Barr elevated Durham from special counsel status to Durham in the final months Trump&#8217;s presidency, giving him additional protections to carry out his work when President Joe Biden became president. Trump and his allies often champion Durham\u2019s investigation as a means to unravel a suspected \u201cRussiagate\u201d The plot against the former president. Democrats and others criticize the inquiry as politically corrupted and meant to discredit Mueller, the FBI&#8217;s top officials, and other members of the public.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times report gave fuel to Durham\u2019s detractors in Congress. It included a lengthy review of the New York Times. \u201cfound that the main thrust of the Durham inquiry was marked by some of the very same flaws \u2014 including a strained justification for opening it and its role in fueling partisan conspiracy theories that would never be charged in court.\u201d The article also outlined how Durham\u2019s investigation \u201cbecame roiled by internal dissent and ethical disputes,\u201d leading to resignations by some dissatisfied prosecutors on the team, including Durham\u2019s No. 2 Nora Dannehy, who allegedly disliked how Barr spoke ominously about the probe\u2019s findings in public.<\/p>\n<p>Barr, who was present at the <a href=\"http:\/\/capcon2023.com\/#Speakers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">California News Publishers Association meeting<\/a>The notion that Durham was a problematic choice for the job was rejected by the president.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe idea that there was a thin basis for doing it doesn\u2019t hold water,\u201d Barr stated. \u201cBecause it wasn\u2019t started as a criminal investigation. One of the duties of the attorney general is to protect against the abuse of criminal and intelligence powers, that they\u2019re not abused to impinge on political activity, so I felt it was my duty to find out what happened there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Barr defended himself in response to one of the most explosive claims in the article \u2014 that Durham expanded his inquiry in the fall of 2019 to include a criminal investigation into \u201csuspicious financial dealings\u201d Trump was linked to the tip of Italian officials. The report stated that the details were not clear and did not recommend Durham being charged.<\/p>\n<p>Barr insisted on the tip \u201cwas not directly about Trump\u201d and argued it was appropriate to rope it into Durham\u2019s investigation because \u201cit did have a relationship to the Russiagate stuff. It was not completely separate from it. And it turned out to be a complete non-issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Durham has so far secured one guilty plea. That of Kevin Clinesmith, an ex-FBI lawyer, who was accused falsifying a document to renew FISA surveillance powers on Carter Page, Trump&#8217;s former foreign policy adviser. Clinesmith was released from prison and could face a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/fbi-lawyer-clinesmith-one-year-bar-suspension-guilty-plea-fisa-deception\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one-year bar suspension<\/a>. Last year, Durham endured setbacks when prosecutions against former Hillary Clinton campaign attorney Michael Sussmann and Igor Danchenko, a key source for British ex-spy Christopher Steele\u2019s anti-Trump dossier, ended in acquittal in Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Whenever Durham\u2019s report is complete, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/obama-doj-official-durham-report-pause\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Attorney General Merrick Grland stated<\/a> He would \u201clike as much as possible to be made public,\u201d However, he stressed that Privacy Act concerns will need to be addressed and that classification is something to consider.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think [Durham]\u2019s going to explain, to the extent he\u2019s allowed to put it out, the whole genesis of [the Russia interference claims] and how it all occurred,\u201d Barr stated, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/politics\/story\/2023-02-01\/bill-barr-says-he-didnt-overstep-in-his-involvement-in-the-durham-probe-of-mueller-investigation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to the Los Angeles Times<\/a>. \u201cSo what\u2019s wrong with that? But it wasn\u2019t a criminal investigation, it was a review to get the story.
