IlhanOmar (D.Minn.), was removed from the House Foreign Affairs Committee by a vote of 2 February. This decision was based on past comments that critics had called anti-Semitic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/house-passes-resolution-to-remove-omar-from-foreign-affairs-committee-over-antisemitism_5026884.html\">The lower chamber approved the resolution<\/a> Party lines were clear with 218 Republicans voting for Omar&#8217;s removal and 211 Democrats voting against it. One lawmaker voted present. Three Republicans, one Democrat and one other person did not vote.<\/p>\n<p>Despite some pushback from GOP critics of the move, the measure easily overcame a procedural hurdle to begin debate in a\u00a0218\u2013209 vote along party lines on Feb. 1.<\/p>\n<p>Omar has been critical of the state in the past. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-israel\">Israel<\/a>One of the most contentious issues in geopolitics today is how to treat Palestinian Christians and Muslims.<\/p>\n<p>Omar responded to Glenn Greenwald&#8217;s tweet in 2019:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGOP Leader Kevin McCarthy threatens punishment for [Omar] and [Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.)] over their criticisms of Israel,\u201d This tweet is. \u201cIt\u2019s stunning how much time US political leaders spend defending a foreign nation even if it means attacking free speech rights of Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Omar responded, \u201cIt\u2019s all about the Benjamins baby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>From Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (Republican from California) to Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer (Democracy) claimed that this was an antisemitic trope. Many lawmakers on both sides have previously claimed that criticizing Israel is antisemitism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRep. Omar\u2019s use of an anti-Semitic stereotype was offensive and irresponsible,\u201d Schumer <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenSchumer\/status\/1095043394018201603\">In a February 2019 tweet.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis kind of intolerance has no place in Congress\u2014or anywhere in American society,\u201d He added. \u201cNo one should invoke anti-Semitic tropes during policy disagreements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Omar later regretted his comments.<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy has repeatedly promised Omar that he would oust Omar from HFAC after he received the gavel. (Kevin Dietsch\/Getty Images)<\/figure>\n<p>Jean-Pierre called it the move to remove Omar from the HFAC \u201ca political stunt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D.N.Y.), also passionately opposed this move at a House Democrat Leadership Press Conference the same day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s going to take place on the floor today is not a public policy debate. It\u2019s not about accountability,\u201d Jeffries said. \u201cIt\u2019s about political revenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democrats used a similar process as the one used against Omar to get rid of Reps. (Win McNamee\/Getty Images)<\/figure>\n<p>Jeffries stated that the move would make it more difficult for Democrats and Republicans alike to work together in the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis kind of poisonous, toxic double standard, it\u2019s going to complicate the relationship moving forward with House Democrats,\u201d He said.<\/p>\n<p>Jeffries also reiterated support for Israel, which was confirmed by him. \u201cshared values and shared strategic interests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. StenyHoyer (D.Md.), the former Democrat majority leader, agreed on the House floor that Omar\u2019s situation was different from that of Greene and Gosar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Greene and Gosar] were not removed for their speech,\u201d Hoyer stated. \u201cThey were removed because they made threats against other members [of Congress].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no equivalency here,\u201d Hoyer also added. \u201cWe believe in free speech, no matter how hateful that speech is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Pramila Japal (D. Wash.), is the leader for the Congressional Progressive Caucus. Simply called the bill, Rep. Jayapal. \u201ca revenge resolution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., called it a distraction \u201cfrom Republicans\u2019 total inability to govern.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Claims of discrimination<\/h2>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, many Democrats took the opportunity to claim that Omar\u2019s removal was discriminatory.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/alx\/status\/1621211947243896833\">Comment on the House floor<\/a> Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), opposed the removal. (Saul Loeb\/AFP\/Getty Images)<\/figure>\n<p>She referred to the social media post which got Gosar fired during the last Congress.<\/p>\n<p>A spoof of the anime is shown in the video \u201cAttack on Titan,\u201d Ocasio-Cortez was depicted as a Titan\u2014a giant man-eating creature in the show\u2014being \u201cslain\u201d Gosar. Gosar has been able to regain his assignments as a committee member since the Republicans took control.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had a member of the Republican caucus threaten my life and the Republican caucus rewarded him with one of the most prestigious committee assignments in this Congress,\u201d Ocasio-Cortez <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepAOC\/status\/1621199776963334145\">said.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Wis.), claimed that the removal was discriminatory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing a smart outspoken black woman of the Muslim faith is apparently the issue,\u201d Pocan.<\/p>\n<p>Omar also echoed these words, calling herself \u201ca Muslim woman from Africa. Is anyone surprised that I\u2019m being targeted?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am an American,\u201d Omar said. \u201cI am an American who was sent here by my constituents to represent them in Congress.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018This Is Not the Same\u2019: Republicans<\/h2>\n<p>Scalise stated that Omar must be removed at the January 31 GOP leadership press conference. \u201cis not the same [as what happened to Greene and Gosar]\u201d There are many ways to do it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. 1, they went after Marjorie Taylor Greene for things that she had said before she was a member of Congress, that she denounced before she was a member of Congress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was very personal when they removed her from every committee,\u201d Scalise added.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4968121\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/GettyImages-1454689340-1200x800-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy wp-image-4968121 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/themes\/eet\/images\/white.png\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/GettyImages-1454689340-1200x800-1.jpg\" alt=\"Epoch Times Photo\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4968121 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/GettyImages-1454689340-1200x800-1.jpg\" alt=\"Epoch Times Photo\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a> Steve Scalise (Republican-American House Leader) speaks in the House Chamber. (Win McNamee\/Getty Images)<\/figure>\n<p>Speaker McCarthy agreed during a press conference on Feb. 2, emphasizing that Greene\u2019s removal was for comments she had said and disavowed prior to being sworn in.<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy also dismissed Jeffries\u2019 fiery comments during his own press conference earlier on Feb. 2.<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy stated that he had followed all procedures to have Omar expelled from the HFAC.<\/p>\n<p>Scalise stressed that Republicans don&#8217;t intend to go so far as Democrats by removing certain members of all their committees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven if Omar were to be removed from the Foreign Affairs Committee, she will be allowed to serve on other committees,\u201d Scalise said. \u201cSo a lot of big differences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He continued, \u201cIf Omar is concerned about being removed, probably be good if you would ask her why she voted to remove Marjorie Taylor Greene and Gosar from their committees, because she did vote to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Republican Critics Call For Foul<\/h2>\n<p>Many Republicans were critical of Omar&#8217;s decision to remove her assignments.<\/p>\n<p>Omar reported that Omar told several Republicans before the vote that they had privately told her they didn&#8217;t like her effort to remove them. \u201cunjust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are trying to do whatever it is that they can within their conference to make sure there is no vote to remove me from the Foreign Affairs Committee,\u201d Omar said.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Victoria Spratz (R-Ind.) Victoria Spratz (R-Ind.) has been vocal in her criticism of the move. She called it a &#8220;shameful&#8221; move. \u201ccharade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo wrongs don\u2019t make a right,\u201d Spartz stated in a statement. \u201cSpeaker Pelosi took unprecedented actions last Congress to remove Reps. Greene and Gosar from their committees without proper due process. Speaker McCarthy is taking unprecedented actions this Congress to deny some committee assignments to the minority without proper due process again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Separate <a href=\"https:\/\/spartz.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/spartz-issues-statement-biden-gosar-greene-omar-pence-santos-schiff-swalwell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Statement<\/a>She argued the same thing in her speech on the House floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs someone who grew up under dictatorship in the Soviet Union, I cherish these freedoms tremendously and understand how hard is to get them back when you lose them. Therefore, regardless of politics, I will vigorously defend our Constitution and our rights,\u201d Spratz said. \u201cWe are not a kangaroo court and have proper committees, like Ethics or Judiciary, to provide proper due processes to all individuals or we can lose credibility with the American people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI adamantly argued for proper due processes last Congress as a member of the Judiciary Committee, so I am not planning to become a hypocrite now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Spratz was not the only critic.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. David Joyce (R-Ohio) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2023\/01\/18\/democrats-prepare-house-gop-deny-members-key-committee-posts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Submitted<\/a> The Washington Post\u00a0last week that he thinks the committee assignments should be left to \u201cthe confines of each party\u201d To figure it out.<\/p>\n<p>He added that Democrats\u2019 use of the process against Greene and Gosar during the last Congress\u00a0\u201ccreates this retaliatory issue for our conference.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Schiff and Swalwell<\/h2>\n<p>Omar is not alone Democrat whose committee assignments are uncertain.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans also indicated that they will not grant Reps. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/schiff-defends-error-riddled-steele-dossier-following-arrest-of-key-source_4095581.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Adam Schiff<\/a> (D.Calif. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/house-rejects-gop-resolution-to-remove-swalwell-from-intelligence-committee_3740509.html?ea_src=ai&#038;ea_med=search\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eric Swalwell<\/a> (D-Calif.), seats on the Intelligence Committee.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5019933\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/GettyImages-1459406115-1200x736-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy wp-image-5019933 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/themes\/eet\/images\/white.png\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/GettyImages-1459406115-1200x736-1.jpg\" alt=\"Epoch Times Photo\" width=\"640\" height=\"393\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5019933 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/GettyImages-1459406115-1200x736-1.jpg\" alt=\"Epoch Times Photo\" width=\"640\" height=\"393\" \/><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a> U.S. Rep. (Kevin Dietsch\/Getty Images)<\/figure>\n<p>Omar stated to reporters on February 1 that she was against the exclusion of Swalwell and Schiff from any committee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnless McCarthy can say how myself, Adam Schiff, and Eric Swalwell are a danger to the institution, our colleagues, then he\u2019s not following the example that was set by Speaker Pelosi,\u201d Omar said.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, during the 117th Congress, then-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) took the unprecedented step of refusing then-House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy\u2019s picks for the Jan. 6 Select Committee.<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy had positioned Rep. Jim Banks, R-Ind.), for the top spot on the committee. McCarthy had appointed Rep. Jim Banks (R.Ind.), as the top committee member and Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, to serve below him. Pelosi turned down the picks, claiming they would harm the integrity and investigation. She instead chose former Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo. Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill.) was also appointed as the ranking member on both the GOP side and Pelosi.<\/p>\n<p>The Intelligence Committee has the right to access classified intelligence information, unlike most House committees. This is in contrast to many other House committees. McCarthy stated that the Intelligence Committee was qualitatively distinct from any other House Commission.<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy said that Swalwell and Schiff will not be allowed onto the committee for ethical reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Schiff did so on a few occasions, especially during his time on House Jan. 6 panel. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/adam-schiff-fabricates-trump-transcript-during-house-hearing-claims-it-was-a-parody_3097379.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Evidence altered or doctored<\/a>.
