I had a new teammate that I played with in 2002, and he always had a gold thong hanging from his locker. And he told me \u2018anytime you struggle, you wear the gold thong, you\u2019re guaranteed to get a hit.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jeter said that he initially thought Giambi was a little crazy \u2014 but when the 2004 slump hit, every day he walked into the locker room, Giambi would point at the thing \u2014 which he kept hanging in his locker at all times.<\/p>\n<p>After 32 games without a hit, Jeter said he\u2019d been willing to try just about anything: \u201cSo finally, I wore the thong. Now it wasn\u2019t thong to skin; I had shorts on underneath, so I put the thong over the shorts: first pitch, home run.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Giambi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/yankees\/2015\/10\/remember_when_yankees_legend_derek_jeter_wore_the.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">confirmed Jeter\u2019s story<\/a> during a 2015 appearance with ESPN\u2019s Dan Le Batard, saying that he wasn\u2019t entirely sure whether Jeter had asked for the thong or someone had put it into his locker prior to the April 29 game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe golden thong is legendary. It\u2019s never not gotten a hit. It was his first slump. I don\u2019t think the guy\u2019s ever slumped in his career. He\u2019s unbelievable.
